It will take another year for the Denver Broncos to finally be free from the salary cap fallout of releasing quarterback Russell Wilson in 2024.

When coach Sean Payton released Wilson last year, the Broncos took on the largest "dead money" salary cap hit in NFL history: $85 million. Denver spread that cap hit over two years: $53 million last season and $32 million this year.

Wilson has already been paid what the Broncos owed him, but for cap accounting purposes, the team still has the QB on their books for one more season.

Next year, Denver will finally be completely free of leftover cap hits from Wilson's contract, and the team is currently projected to have nearly $70 million in available cap space in 2026.

After spending last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Wilson signed a one-year deal with the New York Giants earlier this week. The Broncos are set to host the Giants this fall, so if Wilson wins the starting job in New York, he'll be set to face his old club in 2025.
