Ryan McD and trades

After reading today the Suns put the feelers out on Jimmy Butler, im just at lost for words with McD. Although Jimmy Butler is probably one of my favorite players, i cant help to think McD is just firing from the hip constantly...

I would guess if we look at the time frame he has been in office, ill bet the Suns have the most trades and coaching turnover of any team.

My first problem with this is it creates a bad image internally and externally. Virtually everyone on the roster over time has been thrown around in possible trade deals. Im sure that makes the guys question the organizations direction and commitment to them.

Secondly, it creates a bad image of disfunction overall.

If we look at the SF position (Jimmy Butler), the Suns drafted TJ who is a nice player (starting caliber debatable). They then go out and get Dragan which is a SF/PF. Next they draft josh jackson at the same position. They then give TJ a long term deal. After that they trade up in the draft for Bridges. Following that they pay Ariza $20m, and now they have their neck out on Jimmy B? I understand the NBA is somewhat positionless but most of those guys are fairly set at that position due to their strengths and weaknesses.

It reminds me of how he started hip firing on PGs wjth isiah thomas, dragic, and bledsoe. Then he goes out and gets Bknight, and somehow were left with zero PGs.

If im a player or a fan, im wondering if this guy has any direction or just likes pressing buttons...hes got to go (PS - hire Charles Barkley for GM!)

Supposedly, we were looking to play a part in a Butler trade, not for Butler himself, but for a point guard.

Furthermore, like McD or hate him, virtually none of his moves are ones the press caught wind of prior.

I suspect whatever you read was nonsense and I'm almost certain we have no interest in trading for Butler.

Also, while not high on McD, everything I hear Barkley utter makes me certain he'd be a historically awful GM. He's entertaining for sure... astute, no.

The PG upgrade is the scuttlebutt but if PHX is interested in Butler it’s because McD is looking at every possible star to pair with Booker and Ayton to speed up the timeline. I like Teague for this team more than Tyus Jones. Jones may be younger and a better shooter but 5.7 assists per 36 minutes doesn’t give you the distributor this team needs of course he could always become more of a distributor.

What would be wrong is that Butler would be a rental for us. We're not a team on his list of preferred destinations. Add in how our team is similar to the Timberwolves team he wants to leave, filled with youngsters that aren't quite ready to be competitive, and it would be emptying our cupboards for someone that would likely bail on this team at years end and we would be back at square 1 of our rebuild. We would probably need to tank again to acquire more young talent because no established talent will want to sign with the team Butler just bailed on.

I agree - well, except for your last sentence. I highly doubt any player is adding or removing a team from their FA destination list based on anything Jimmy Butler does.

Was there something in the news that I missed? Like Phrazbit, everything I've seen and read is about the Suns trying to land a PG in the Butler proceedings, and nothing has mentioned Phoenix going after Butler themselves. I'm not sure what the fuss is about.

I remember reading something about it a few days ago but to me it was just Ryan doing his job. I'm not particularly fond of Butler but if a good player becomes available, I think it's unreasonable to not expect your GM to at least make a phone call.

I agree with this take. Although I think Butler is the wrong choice (Phoenix does not seem to be a destination team for him), McDonough has always been consistent that he wants to add a star player to the roster.

Also at SF i forgot to mention is Davon Reed who i actually like a lot. Like what is the plan with these guys? Some may be able to play 2 guard. I could see bridges or davon playing the 2 a little bit but obviously book is manning that spot 38mpg.

Not likely, minutes have been trending downward for awhile and he's never averaged more than 35 minutes. In fact, no one in the NBA averaged 37 minutes or more last season. And Koko sounds like he wants players going full speed so hopefully that means Devin will be in the low 30's. And Davon Reed is actually a shooting guard not a small forward although he can probably do spot duty at the 3.
