In a van...down by the river.
First of all i'm viewing on a standard def Phillips 35" tv.
In the past i've always run my PS2 and DVD player thru S-Vid and have been satisfied w/the results however i recently bought a PS3 and have been using a "PS2" S-vid conversion cable for it. The clarity and color was excellent but it had a slightly visible rolling horizontal line rolling thru the picture(i assume that's because it wasn't the correct cable). So i went looking for a PS3 S-vid cable and all i found was a PS3 "component" cable so i decided to give it a try. I also bought my first blue-ray disc movie(Black Hawk Down).
Right off i noticed that the clarity had actually decreased in definition and the colors are overly green and the red's are almost too bright...not enough blue's it seems. I even went as far as comparing a PS2 game/and a standard DVD(same movie) side by side against the PS3 using component and it just doesn't look right. I intend on finding an S-Vid cable for my PS3 but any feedback from those of you that may have some input on this would be appreciated.
I was under the impression that component was very comparable to S-Vid.

I'm also a little confused.

Bluray on SD TV ?

I would think you need a HD TV and HDMI to get full quality from BR

You do but BR shouldn't look worse than standard DVD.
I have read that the picture quality of s-vid is just a hair-notch below component but even if they're both the same i don't know why component looks green as hell and with less clarity on a BR player........ vs s-video on a standard DVD player.

Make sure that you have the colors correct. If you have swapped the Green and the Blue cable in component, you will usually see a "green as hell" picture. Component should be more than a hair notch above S-Video.

Yeah i double checked that and it's hooked up right. I don't have the red/white audio jacks hooked up because i'm using optical but that doesn't mean anything.

Did you go back into the PS3 setup and redo the video portion? Sometimes it will automatically give you the highest resolution possible, but because the S-Video cable can only accept 480i, your PS3 might still be stuck in "standard definition."

I'm trying, I'm trying.

The thing with component is the color is on a separate cable from the luminance. You will get more color from a component cable.

It could be that the setting on the TV are just set too high for a component cable. The colors would be more muted via s-video when compared to component.

It's a 32"
I lost 3 inches. I hate when that happens:D.
Phillips 32" flat screen Model 32RF50 S127
--------------------------------------
I'm beginning to think that my eyes are just having trouble with the brighter colors(red's). I tinkered with the tv's picture controls a bit.
I maintain that the definition/clarity with s-vid(at least here) is at least equal to component.
Meh....i'm shopping for a new HD tv anyway. Should be in business by August:)
Still watching prices fall while i gather $$$ and decide on plasma or LCD.(Leaning towards plasma though)

S-video is only able to display 480i. You can't maintain the same resolution as you can with component, because its not possible. Component can go all the way up to 1080p.

When viewing on a standard def tv the difference is negligable.

Why would you be using the PS3 and standard definition, when your TV is capable of more.

His first post says it's a standard def TV...

Yeah, misread there.

mojo.... Have you calibrated the component output? I know you said that you have checked the colors and such. Something is a miss. I doubt a new cable is bad right off of the bat.

Because you are using standard definition, why not just use the composite cables that came with the PS3?

Like i stated in my original post,i went to purchase an S-Vid cable for my PS3 because composite sucks(i've used S-Vid for my PS2 for years because the upgrade over composite hookups is night and day on a standard def tv) and when i couldn't find one i decided to try component instead. Until i buy an HDTV i'm just trying to get the most out of my PS3.....thats all.
Also,i found a site with comprehensive info on PS3 settings so i've got it set correctly. My main complaint is that the red's are slightly pink, there's to much green, and the clarity isn't as clear as it was with an S-vid cable.
With lamens eyes there's nothing really "wrong" with the picture, i'm just being very picky. I just to need to go "high def" ASAP.
