LOGANSPORT ― With two of the top five offenses in the state matching up, points were expected between South Bend Saint Joseph and Maconaquah boys basketball in its IHSAA Class 3A semi-state semifinal game Saturday morning.
They exceeded those, and then some.
Saint Joseph put up an eye-popping 115 points, making Maconaquah’s 81 look modest at best.
The 34-point victory advances the Huskies to tonight’s semi-state title game at 8 p.m. back at Logansport High School. Saint Joe is the defending semi-state champions.

How they made it here: Why defense, not offense, is the 'DNA' for South Bend Saint Joseph boys basketball
“I’ve told our guys to be confident all year,” Saint Joseph coach Eric Gaff said. “I told them, once we get to the postseason, we’re not calling the dogs off. We tell the guys every possession is offensive – whether we’re on offense or defense, we can score out of it. Guys were able to hit shots. It was pretty fun to watch.”
There were four lead changes in the first three minutes. Once the Huskies went ahead, 9-7, on a 3-point shot from sophomore Elijah King, they never trailed again.
It was a 27-22 Saint Joseph lead at the end of the first quarter. The game’s biggest stretch came in the final 90 seconds of the second quarter, with the Huskies doubling its lead from 10 to 20. King sunk a ‘3’ with three seconds left before the break to put his team ahead, 62-42.
“That’s a team that can put points up, too, and so when you’ve got a chance to bury a team like that, you have to,” Gaff said. “That 10-0 run gave us some distance, and we were able to finish them off in the third quarter.”
Saint Joseph eclipsed the 100-point mark on a ‘3’ from senior Chase Konieczny with 5:02 left in the game.
Maconaquah senior Josiah Ball, a Bethel commit, scored 40 points in his final high school game. AJ Kelly added 20 points and Devon Murry 15 to provide the bulk of the scoring for the Braves. Their season ends with a 21-6 record.
For Saint Joseph, Konieczny finished with 25 points, junior Nick Shrewsberry 22, King 20 and senior Brashaun Woods 18 points and 12 rebounds, eight of which came on the offensive glass. Junior Ethan Roseman had 12 assists.
As a team, the Huskies shot 61% from the field. They made 14 shots from 3-point range and only committed nine turnovers the entire contest. All-but two players that entered the game scored for Saint Joseph, who are 25-3 now on the season.
