One of the New Orleans Saints’ most glaring holes is at cornerback. Kool-Aid McKinstry is in line to step into a starting role in Year 2, and Alontae Taylor should return to the slot in Brandon Staley’s system.
As the roster is currently constructed, Isaac Yiadom will be the other outside corner after spending a year with the San Francisco 49ers. That signing doesn’t rule out another move being made at the position.
Bleacher Report‘s Gary Davenport sees this as the perfect opportunity for Will Johnson to make an immediate impact as a rookie. Half of that is skill, the other half is opportunity. The opportunity is for the taking, but some have questioned the first part of that equation.
After a strong sophomore season, his last year in Ann Arbor was soured by injury. A turf toe limited the cornerback in his final year. He wasn't able to make up for it either due to a hamstring injury keeping him out of Michigan's pro day. That has placed an air of uncertainty around his draft stock.
Those injuries aren't enough to sway Davenport, and he doesn't think it shoud sway the Saints because a "healthy Johnson would be the team’s best cornerback the moment he got off the plane."
