The New Orleans Saints used their second pick in Round 3 of the 2025 NFL draft to take Virginia safety Jonas Sanker at No. 93 overall. He's an interesting prospect -- Sanker is highly regarded for his sure tackling and playmaking ability. The team captain led Virginia in tackles in each of the last two seasons while breaking up 19 passes and logging 13 tackles for loss in his career. He doesn't miss many tackles, either.

He just might become the heir-apparent for Tyrann Mathieu. Sanker can play on special teams right away (he blocked a field goal last year) but he's not going to be out of the starting lineup for very long. He can be a real difference-maker for this Saints team.

Drafting a couple of young defenders for the all the college coaches the Saints just hired to develop makes sense. This is a team that needs an infusion of depth in the worst way, especially on defense where they've been getting older and more expensive at all three levels. If young guys like Sanker and his fellow third-round pick Vernon Broughton can carve out roles for themselves in 2025, it'll go a long way towards rebuilding that side of the ball.
