In the days leading up to the 2018 NFL draft, even the most connected draft experts weren’t sure what the New York Giants were planning to do with the No. 2 overall pick. Faced with the option of picking a player who could help Eli Manning get back to the playoffs or finding the quarterback’s successor, first-year general manager Dave Gettleman elected to squeeze the remaining drops out of his franchise icon. The pick was Penn State running back Saquon Barkley, despite the rumors that Gettleman would take USC quarterback Sam Darnold at No. 2 if the Cleveland Browns passed on him with the No. 1 overall pick. Obviously, that situation did not play out, much to the benefit of the New York Jets and Darnold himself.
