ESPN is saying the Mets ended up winning the Johan Santana sweepstakes. That's not good for other NL teams trying to get to the World Series.

The Mets have just fleeced the Twins. How do you trade fro arguably the best pitcher in the game without giving up your top prospect (OF Fernando Martinez). Plus they didn't even get Mike Pelfrey who is better than all the pitching prospects they got. Karma is come full circle since the Mets got fleeced by the D-Rays for Kazmir. The Twins would have been better trading him to the Yankees for Phillip Hughes & Cabrera.

Why didn't we offer our Haren package to the Twins for Santana? Never mind I forgot we are cash strapped.

Well on the one hand this deal will make the Mets tougher, and thus make it more difficult for the D'backs to make the playoffs, however, its not like we're in their division, so I'm mostly happy with this deal. I personally loathe the fact that NL and AL don't play each other in their entirety every year (like the NBA does), I think it screws fans out of seeing great players like Santana who are in the other league. So I'm glad I'll finally get to see this guy pitch in person.

#1 Haren's younger

#2 Haren's still signed for 3 more years at a reasonably decent rate and even when he DOES hit free agency, he's not going to ask for 1/5th of what Santana is commanding in free agency

#3 There are only a handful of teams (both New Yorks, Boston, St. Louis, the LA teams and the Chicago teams) who would have a practical chance of meeting Johan's contractual demands. Keep in mind, he turned down a 5 year, 98 million dollar contract from Minnesota before being traded. If he's turning down 19.6 million dollar per year contracts, he's NOT coming cheap and thus it wouldn't be practical for Arizona to give up the farm to rent Santana for a few months, at most a season.
