Bucks Sign Daniel Santiago

MILWAUKEE, July 17 -- The Bucks have signed free agent center Daniel Santiago to a contract for the 2003-04 season, General Manager Larry Harris announced today. Terms of the deal were not disclosed in accordance with club policy.

Santiago spent two seasons with the Phoenix Suns (2000-02) before spending the 2002-03 in Italy, where he averaged 12.0 points and 7.8 rebounds for Lottomatica Roma.

"Daniel will have an opportunity to compete for minutes on this team," Harris said. "He adds an offensive dimension to our frontcourt, and has the ability to score facing or with his back to the basket."

In two years with the Suns, Santiago played in 57 games, starting two. He averaged 3.1 points and 1.9 rebounds for Phoenix. Santiago played two seasons in Italy with Pallacanestro (1998-2000) before signing with the Suns and also played the 1996 Olympics and on two World Championship teams (1998, 2002) for the Puerto Rican National Team.

A native of Lubbock, Texas, Santiago played college ball for two seasons at the University of New Mexico (1995-97) before finishing his college career at St. Vincent College.

Thanks King A! I was just wondering where he was. I am looking at his stats for the European league he was in versus his stats with us. Maybe this is a guage for us as to how the stats in Europe equate to the stats here in the NBA?? Just a thought. Hopefully he is maturing into a better player and will stick here for a while. I was wondering why the Suns didn't bring him back, or the Mexican guy we had at center breifly, just for a summer league look anyway. I remember the Mexican fellow had a couple decent games against Shaq to his credit.

Exactly. Anyone hear what happened to him? I believe he was the first Mexican player in the NBA. If not it was a marketing ploy by the Suns when it was announced at a game I went to.

Yeah, I miss Horacio. I had actually seen a game here in Los Angeles where he played some really good defense against Shaq. I remember in one quarter he got really agressive and got a block, took a charge and caused Shaq to miss a couple of shots during a stretch. It was pretty exciting to see that brief moment of brilliance. Then the coaches (I don't remember who, Ainge or Skiles) took him out for the rest of the game. Typical.

I remember being at a game where he got a defensive rebound, got all excited, targetted J Kidd on the break and threw an outlet pass to the 4th row at center court

I realy like this guy when he was with the Suns, but I heard from a Suns source is that he has bad feet and ankles and that is why they didn't look at picking him up after his contact was over. It is good to see him get another chance hope he does well.
