Will they also have to remake Grand Theft Auto Vice City, as well?

I know Scarface was already a remake but come on. You have to leave the classics alone.

I wonder how many people knew before today that the 1983 Scarface was actually a remake of a 1932 original. The 83 version was also met with heavy skepticism.

(Full disclosure: I did not know these things before today)

That said, doing a 2nd remake makes 'Scarface' a brand, not a product. I'm on the fence on this. But, I'm mostly open to the idea....

Lol! Gotta give Rockstar Games a plot to work with....

I knew only because I have a friend who absolutely loves movies and we were watching Scarface a few years ago and he mentioned it.

I knew the '83 movie was a re-make, but I thought it starred Edward G. Robinson (his movie was 1931's Little Caesar) and not Paul Muni.

Anyway, the first two Scarface movies don't have much in common other than the title and a sociopathic protagonist. A third movie could be good as long as it doesn't try to re-invent the Tony Montana character.

i had no clue .... but it does kind of make sense

I could be OK with it given that it's pretty much a rework .... just do it well and it will be fine ..... do a crap job and you'll damage the brand .... you set a high expectation when you attach that Scarface name and you better have a product that can live up to the comparison

Scarface was such a time & place movie .... early 80s, cocaine, miami, south american drug lords, immigrants, club scenes, the rags to riches live fast die fast elements

plus Pacino did such a good job with that character

it would be tough - but I could see them working in a pretty good story with the MX cartels, border violence, questionable enforcement tactics like "fast & furious", etc .... maybe have the "scarface" type character live in LA so you could still sex it up a little

How bout this for pure entertainment purposes... Regardless of how we feel about it being remade,, say it's going to happen no matter what and the studio wants you to cast the role of Scarface from todays current crop of Actors.

Who would you pick?

Jordi Mollà comes to mind, I cant really think of anyone else.

This is what I mean about Scarface becoming a brand rather than a product. If they re-do the 83 version, it's New Coke. If they use 'Scarface' as merely a vehicle for a new story on the "sociopathic protagonist" within some black market relevant to our times, it's Apple.

That was my wife's first suggestion (MX cartels). The problem is that it could get drowned out by all the other MX stuff out there (e.g., Traffic).

Who would you pick?

He's already played that role. I don't remember the movie. Maybe it was Traffic, but he was a druglord kingpin. Also, although I haven't seen it and don't know his character, isn't he in Columbiana right now?

The better move would be to find an unknown, up-and-coming actor. Otherwise, why not have a competition between Molla, Del Toro, and Bardem?

They should wait until it's been 51 years since the last Scarface was made...like they did the first time around. :D

Well, you have to know that in today's environment that if this Scarface re-do is successful, they'll do another one within a few years after. Then you'll see "I am Scarface" commercials like the "I am Tiger Woods" commercials from a few years back....

Closest he came to the role was in Blow.

Was it Blow? I don't remember. I just remember he had a little daughter whom he idolized and I seem to recall that she was killed in a shootout and he went bananas from there.

Blow was based on a true story, which is why I thought it might have been Traffic.

Hmmmm....

It was his character Johnny Tapia in Bad Boys II that I'm thinking of:

He already did a Scarface-lite character. I'm in support of an unknown coming in for this role....

Yeah, my bad. You're correct. I vaguely remember that movie but I remember him playing a bad guy.
