Some details remain before deal's official

ESPN.com news services

Byron Scott told ESPN on Thursday that he has agreed to a deal in principle to become the next head coach of the New Orleans Hornets.

While some details have yet to be worked out, Scott expects the deal to happen. Scott, fired earlier this season as head coach of the New Jersey Nets, currently is working as a studio analyst for ABC and ESPN.

Scott said last week that his visit with the Hornets went well and expressed through his agent that he was interested in the job. Scott had been considered a top candidate to replace Tim Floyd, who was fired May 7 after one season.

Scott led the Nets to two straight NBA Finals appearances -- losses to the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs -- and had a 149-139 record in 3½ seasons before he was fired in January.

This could have an effect on all the Kobe stuff as well. There was speculation that Kobe would deman Scott take over as coach for the Lakers or he'd leave. Now...who, Kurt Rambis?

Why wouldn't Bryant like John MacLeod?

come E - I'm still picking myself up over the Magic getting the number 1 pick hurting the chances of getting McGrady - can't I delude myself for even ten seconds about Kobe again before that wish is crushed?

Who's the best option of the Lakers keep Kobe and lose Phil? Should they go for a name or try to pull up an assistant or relative unknown?

Although it would be hilarious to watch George Karl coach the Lakers with Shaq and Kobe. That would give the tabloids(read: NY Daily News) plenty to write about.

I have to wonder just how interested Scott was in the Laker job. It seems to me the pressure would be totally unreasonable, worse than the Nets where he gets fired after going to the finals TWICE IN A ROW.

In New Orleans, just getting to the second round in the West would be considered a huge coup. The pressure won't be quite as high, although the challenge of just making the playoffs will be considerable.
