Chiefs | Deal Reached with Surtain; Must Now Deal with Dolphins - from www.KFFL.com
Fri, 1 Apr 2005 07:01:28 -0800

Alex Marvez and Ethan Skolnick, of the Sun-Sentinel, report the Kansas City Chiefs and CB Patrick Surtain have agreed in principle on a multi-year contract extension, which includes an eight-digit signing bonus. However, the Chiefs now have to work out a trade with the Miami Dolphins to acquire him. The Chiefs are reportedly offering a fourth-round pick, while the Dolphins are looking for a selection in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft. Dolphins head coach Nick Saban said the team will not compromise when it comes to their asking price for him.

If you read the full article Saban says quite clearly he won't deal Surtain for less than his asking price and the Chiefs have not met it. So financial terms or not, they need to reach an agreement with Miami on the trade first.

Kc doesn't have a second or third.... Not sure which, but it was for the guard they traded from Philly.

3rd for Welbourn. they have a compensatory 3rd, but you can't trade those picks. So Miami clearly wants their 2, and they're offering the 4.

Ok, what's our deal going to be for someone like Rolle if we pick him at 8 compared to what Surtain is going to get?

Signing bonus will be close but the annual "nut" will be much smaller for a draft pick. Plus Rolle is 23 versus Surtain who will be 30 when the season starts.

The season doesn't start until June 2006 ? :D

Surtain is 28, will be 29 in June.

Yeah the main difference will be salary. Of course Surtain would probably get one of those 5 year 40 million deals that everyone throws their hands up at and says how ridiculous it is, and in reality it's a big bonus 3 year deal and then he gets cut before the big salaries at the end kick in. Unless we sign him since we like to do deals straight salary across the board.

what they could do is meet in the middle, i.e. trade draft picks, KC's 2nd round #46 overall for Miami's 3rd round #70 overall, according to the trade value chart the point differnce between the 2 picks is 225 points, or roughly the value of 3rd round overall pick #74.

I dont know about anyone else -- but I have no delusions on the Cardinals signing Patrick Surtain--

Neither Denny or Graves have ever acknowledged that there is a player named Patrick Surtain in the NFL, much less saying anything about actually getting him for the team.

I would be happy with one unsubstantiated rumour from a published source saying the Cardinals have expressed interest in Surtain.

I think Todd McShay on Insiders said something like "Surtain will draw interest from a number of teams including ... Arizona." But you're right that nobody not on this board has ever suggested we're actually interested in him.

It's very much a "that makes sense" situation. We have Macklin and ? at CB right now. We have Denny saying Hill needs to lower his demands if he wants to be a Cardinal, and we have Green reiterating he does NOT draft on need he drafts on BPA.

So it's entirely possible we end the draft with no Hill, and no CB in the first 2-3 rounds.

I'm not overly scared because as I've said before I don't really believe Green is BPA all the way I'm convinced he understands he can't go into the season with 4 highly paid WR's and Macklin and a bunch of waiver wire CB's and expect to have a good defense. But finding a way to get Surtain would free us to truly draft BPA.
