Seahawks | Believed to have worked out financial deal with Branch
Fri, 1 Sep 2006 10:07:18 -0700

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports New England Patriots WR Deion Branch has reached an agreement with an unnamed NFC team, believed to be the Seattle Seahawks. However, the team still would need to come to an agreement with the Patriots to acquire Branch.

Shrewd move by both Branch and the Patriots, by the time the Jets and Seahawks catch on Branch will have 2 signing bonuses and Pats will have picks from both teams.

Maybe the Jets and Hawks can give the Pats each a 1st rounder and share him? :)

The Hawks offered 6 years 39 million while the jets offered a little more. The Seahawks would also give the Pats a 2nd rounder and Nate Burelson for Branch. That is the deal on the table right now. If a deal does not get done than Branch said he will sit til mid november. BTW the Pats want two #1's which leads people to believe that it was all a smokescreen in the first place and the Pats really never believed teams would give branch the type of money thats being offered.

Well, it's past the 4:00 PM EST "deadline" for the Branch deal to be done.

Patriots | Branch trade deadline expires
Fri, 1 Sep 2006 13:06:16 -0700

ESPN reports the deadline for New England Patriots WR Deion Branch to negotiate his own trade has come and gone. The Patriots issued a statement saying Branch remains property of the team.

Patriots | Branch files a grievance against the team
Fri, 1 Sep 2006 12:56:26 -0700

Tom E. Curran, of NBC Sports.com, reports New England Patriots WR Deion Branch and his agent, Jason Chayut, have filed a grievance against the team with the NFLPA, according to sources. They are asking a special master to hear the grievance in an emergency meeting Friday, Sept. 1. Although the Seattle Seahawks talked numbers with Chayut, the New York Jets wound up being the only team to talk to New England about what its contract demands would be. The Jets offer, the source said, was for six years and $36 million but it had a "funky structure." Chayut is alleging that there was a verbal agreement between he and the Patriots that New England would deal Branch if presented with a "fair and reasonable" offer. Chayut also alleges that the Jets presented New England with that offer but that the Patriots didn't act on it.

The Pats turned down the deals because they want to keep Branch...what the opportunity provided was a guage on Branch's market value...so look for the Pats to offer Branch a similar deal...they really have no other choice because their WRs are subpar...and while it's a poor precedent to renegotiate existing player contracts, in this day and age, exceptions need to be made for key players like Branch...a Super Bowl MVP and the favorite target for Tom Brady.

What exactly is Branch's grievance? The Patriots were going to make him play out the contract he signed and didn't feel it was in their best interests to trade a player on his own terms?

He will argue that a "reasonable" trade was offered, but they refused to do it, demanding more. I doubt it will fly. You get into a VERY tough spot when arbitrators begin to dictate fair and unfair compensations for trades that were probably never going to happen.

Basicly Branch and his agent are saying NEP didn't act in good faith. Branch was granted permission to pursue trade offers and New England never really planned on trading Branch. I'm sure they are shocked he got such huge offers.

I doubt the greivance can really do anything, but, now New England will have to either pony up a good contract or actually follow thru on the trade. As with those offers on the table, there is no reason Branch would want to play for anything less.

Hey New England, welcome to a $102+ Million salary cap.

a bit from one of the boston herald hacks

...Sources say the Pats have backed off requests for two first-round picks and would accept a first-round pick and a middle-round pick. Though the Seahawks didn’t offer higher than a second-round pick, a source they said they would be willing to trade their first-round pick, which would likely be low in the draft anyway.
That would be better than teams have made out for the other top-flight wideouts traded this offseason and preseason. Javon Walker, Ashley Lelie and Donte Stallworth were shipped out for no better than a second round pick.
Whatever happens, it’s now clear the Patriots misread the market and it may cost them their No. 1 wide receiver.

not sure what will happen or not, but given the situation with jackson and with engram aging i would be for bringing in branch if it made sense - the hawks have a ton of cap room left and could structure a deal so most of the hit is in this season, lessing the impact as the contract goes on

this thing could still have some life left in it
