Fuson? I'd love to see Arizona bring him in as GM. He's overdue for a job and an opportunity.

Fuson likes playing young players too much for the D-Backs and I see him taking over the Pads once Towers gets canned. None of these names are anything to get excited about.

I don't know if we have a shot but could we get Billy Beane from Oakland?

Actually, I remember reading one of those Buzz columns in Sports Weekly about a year or so ago mentioning that if Beane were to leave Oakland, Arizona and Los Angeles (Dodgers) would be his "likely destinations".

Take 90 percent of what's rumored in "The Buzz" with a grain of salt but I found it fitting being you asked.

Not even Cashman?? :biglaugh:

I'm sort of with you. Fuson and Rizzo were the only ones that truly stood out. Gillick's past reputation is impressive, but he's also 68 and would be nothing more than a short term option.

Beane ain't leaving. The A's are set up better in the short and long term and their ownership has said they're going to raise payroll.

Plus Beane bought a small interest in the A's. Too bad, because last year Moorad hinted at his liking for Beane.

The Yankees will fire Brian Cashman... you can have him!

No thanks.

Some of his moves have been outright awful (Wily Mo Pena for Drew Henson anyone) and I'm not convinced he can be an effective GM without George's big bucks.

I plan on posting a more comprehensive post on what the Dbacks must do, but this brief message will have to suffice for now....

I would like to submit Al Avila as the ideal candidate to be the next Dbacks GM and eventually I will present my blue-print on what they must do to turn this franchise around, but that would be the perfect catalyst....

About 2-3 weeks ago he's the guy who said Rizzo clearly had the inside track. A few weeks before Moorad got approved he said MLB was going to force him out of the franchise entirely. Last Fall he said Billy Beane was likely to be our next GM.

Take with a BIG grain of salt. This guy spins yarn out his....

More news on the GM Front..

This from the Boston Globe

Dan Duquette's name is still in the mix as a general manager candidate in Arizona. His longtime relationship with Diamondbacks president Jeff Moorad (remember that Manny Ramirez deal they struck when Moorad was an agent?) may help.

And this from The Newark Star Ledger

It's been reported that Padres GM KEVIN TOWERS would be a candidate for the vacant GM spot in Arizona. If Towers were to leave San Diego, it could be a very attractive spot for Towers' good friend, BRIAN CASHMAN, should Cashman decide (or be told to) leave the Yankees

Did I mention before that I want Arizona to avoid Duquette like he's the plague?

There has been plenty of speculation as to who might be interviewed by the team with names like the Yankees' Brian Cashman, former Mariners GM Pat Gillick and former Dodgers GM Dan Evans among those mentioned. Moorad, though, said the club will not announce who it interviews.

:thumbdown :barf:

Evans? No.. His track record with the Dodgers was less than impressive. Gillick? No.. He's too old. Cashman? No.. I'm incredulous to the thoughts and beliefs that he can do it without Steinbrenner's open wallet.

Wonder what ***** Moorad has against Rizzo.

Not sure its 'against' Rizzo - or against Bob Miller, the other in-house name that was mentioned before (although his handling of the Farm system this year has been blah at best).

Rizzo was quoted during the Drew negotiations as saying how pleased he was that Moorad (specifically) gave him more active involvement for some of the contract negotiations, and that this was an area that he hadn't gotten much experience in previously. He just may not have the kind of well-honed business background they want.

Plus, I agree - it is a good idea to go outside - God knows, we've griped at all the within-the-organization hires in recent years. If they really get someone smart, forward-thinking, and with good fiscal sense (rather than one of the oft-mentioned retreads) it could be OK. Someone outside the org will not have the sentimental attachment to guys like Gonzo, and may feel no pressure to try to make Voldemort's past contract blunders look good.

It's either Beane or Rizzo or bust. Cashman won't be as effective with a smaller budget, and that was my other choice.
