Seahawks contact Manning's camp; QB on waiver wire

Teams across the NFL have been notified that Ex-Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning officially hit the waiver wire Wednesday afternoon, league sources told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora, permitting quarterback hungry franchises to begin their pursuit of the four-time MVP.

Now that Peyton Manning officially is not a Colt, our analysts share their final prediction for where No. 18 will play in 2012. More ...

One team in particular wasted no time expressing its interest, as the Seattle Seahawks have already reached out to Manning's camp, a league source told NFL Network's Albert Breer.

The Seahawks were among the initial group of potential Manning suitors, and the team reportedly plans to come at Manning "checkbook blazing" to ensure he makes the Pacific Northwest his new home, ESPN New York reported Tuesday, citing a league source.

During an emotional Wednesday news conference in which Colts owner Jim Irsay announced the team's decision to part ways with its Hall of Fame-bound signal-caller, Manning told reporters that he definitely plans to play next year after missing the entire 2011 season. The only question is where he will suit up come September, and Manning admitted he hasn't thought about a potential new team at this point.

"I don't feel like I have anything to prove," Manning said. "Nobody loves their job more than I do. Nobody loves playing quarterback more than I do. I still want to play."

The Cardinals, Dolphins, Redskins, Broncos and Seahawks have begun pursuing QB Peyton Manning, league sources said Wednesday.

The Chiefs and others are expected to be in the mix as well.

The teams are moving just hours after the Indianapolis Colts officially announced Manning’s release. The quarterback, who is trying to return to the football field after undergoing multiple neck surgeries and missing the entire 2011 season, has been placed on waivers, league sources said.

A league source said the Broncos called Manning’s representatives Wednesday. Another league source told NFL Network’s Albert Breer that the Seahawks have also initiated contact with the quarterback.

A source with knowledge of the situation said that the Texans are one team that is not interested in Manning. Houston is behind QB Matt Schaub, and is likely to extend his contract.

Cardinals need to quickly put together an entourage of Whiz, Graves, Larry, Wilson, probably Dockett to keep things interesting :) with Michael Bidwill flying them in his personal plane to Peyton's doorsteps.

Resigning Larry was huge for Mike B, but you gotta think he is seeing stars with the possibility that his legacy could involve getting one of the greatest QB's of all time. He's been trying and trying to make a name for himself across the league, and this is the best possible thing he could do to make that happen.

NFL NetworK crawl now saying that Cards are one of 4 or 5 teams who have contacted Manning.

Peyton Manning derby: Ranking 12 potential landing spots for QB’s services

8. Arizona Cardinals: In some ways, I like this move: Ken Whisenhunt is a smart, player friendly, offensive-minded head coach, and Larry Fitzgerald is the game’s best receiver. Beanie Wells emerged last season as a legitimate running threat, and there are still a few standout players (especially tackle Darnell Dockett) on a defense that has fallen off precipitously since Super Bowl XLIII. There’s no threat of inclement weather, and there’s a retractable roof over the stadium just in case. However, the Cardinals also have lots of holes, are shaky on the offensive line and have to face the 49ers twice a year. For many reasons, I just can’t see this happening. I keep trying to picture Whisenhunt making the case to notoriously cheap owner Bill Bidwill (along with Bidwill’s son, Michael, and the Bidwills’ faithful steward in bean-counting, general manager Rod Graves) that a year after trading a talented young cornerback (Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie) and a second-round draft pick to acquire Kevin Kolb – and giving Kolb a five-year, $63-million contract with $21 million in guaranteed money – the franchise should pay a 36-year-old quarterback coming off several neck surgeries even more. Good luck with that.

I just thought the Rod Graves comment was really funny. I don't care about Silver otherwise and did not even read the entire article.

Redskins not on Peyton's list

Report: Redskins already out on Peyton Manning chase

114

Daniel Snyder might want Peyton Manning, but that doesn't mean he can have him.

The Redskins are on the hunt for a quarterback, and a healthy Manning represents the best option on the free-agent market since, well, ever. It makes sense why Snyder, the Redskins' free-spending owner, would want him badly.

But according to Chris Russell, the Redskins beat reporter for ESPN 980-AM, it's not happening.

“A couple of different sources inside the organization have told me that Manning’s camp made it pretty clear to Redskins officials he doesn’t want to come here,” Russell said Thursday on ESPN's "SportsCenter," (via ProFootball.com). "… There’s lots of reasons for that. His brother Eli, the colder weather, the whole situation down in Miami and so on and so forth. But unless that changes -- and I’m taking my sources at their word -- I don’t think Manning’s coming here to D.C.”

NFL Network analyst Marshall Faulk -- a former teammate of Manning's in Indy -- stated emphatically on Wednesday that Manning will never play in the same conference, let alone division, as his brother.

"We need to see a Manning Super Bowl, that's what they want, this family wants it," said Faulk, who shares the same first name as one of Manning's sons. "He will not upstage his brother and knock him out of going to the Super Bowl by being in the NFC."

In other words, don't hold your breath, 'Skins fans. On the bright side, the John Beck/Rex Grossman tag team can still be yours at a very reasonable price.

Namath does not see Jets as an attractive place for Manning

Namath: Jets need order to attract Peyton Manning

This might come as a shock to you, but Joe Namath has an opinion about Peyton Manning and the Jets.

We kid about the shocking part. This is perhaps the least shocking thing of all-time. You could tell us President Obama does his own laundry and we'd be less shocked.

The smile didn't last long for Joe Namath in Los Angeles. (Associated Press)

As long as there are reporters with access to Namath's phone number, you will have access to Namath's thoughts on the team he led to a Super Bowl III title in 1969.

On Thursday, a reporter from The Star-Ledger reached Namath at his Florida home. Namath doesn't see the Jets -- as currently constituted -- as an attractive landing spot for Manning.

"The Jets have to get things together on their own turf before someone with his background would be interested in coming," he said.

Namath, of course, is referring to the discord that came to define the Jets' disappointing 8-8 season in 2011. We haven't heard of any new squabbles of late, but that doesn't mean all is well between Mark Sanchez, Santonio Holmes and the rest of the gang.

Namath also offered an interesting take on the challenges of starting over with a new team. He played 12 seasons with the Jets before closing his career with a mercifully short run with the Los Angeles Rams.

"What was difficult for me, that I didn't anticipate, was how much all the newness could get in the way and be a distraction," he said. "I wasn't prepared for that feeling. The new faces, new places, new system."

Though he doesn't mention it, Namath also had to deal with things like groupies, thick shag carpeting, endless nights, and knees that were knees only in theory.

"I think he'll handle it much better than I did," Namath said of Manning.
Yeah, he's probably right.

49ers may enter into Peyton sweepstakes with Smith not happy with their offer

Smith reportedly wants more years in 49ers' contract offer

If the 49ers are happy with quarterback Alex Smith and not interested in getting involved in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes, as NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora has reported, then why is the team taking so long to sign the former first overall draft pick to a new deal?

Elliot Harrison examines possible landing spots for six high-profile free agents, including Mario Williams and Vincent Jackson. More ...

An offer for Smith has been on the table for "some time," according to the Sacramento Bee, but, the newspaper reports, the sides can't agree on the length of a deal or the amount of guaranteed money in it.

The contract proposed by the 49ers is shorter than the five-year deal Smith and his agent, Tom Condon, are seeking, a source with knowledge of the situation told The Bee.
With Manning (who is also represented by Condon) on the open market, teams everywhere will be evaluating their quarterback situations. And while all signs point to the 49ers and Smith coming to a compromise, the longer his and Manning's status remain undefined, the more uncertainty will creep in. Free agency begins Tuesday, and Smith could decide to see what else is out there.

Former Colts coach Tony Dungy, for one, believes the 49ers' lack of commitment to Smith makes San Francisco the best fit for Manning.
"San Francisco, I look at what they did and whether they've made that commitment to Alex Smith yet, I don't know," Dungy told NFL Network on Wednesday. "I don't know where they stand, but that's a team that's got great defense, it has some young receivers, a very good tight end and a good back ... you put Peyton Manning in that offense and people are going to be scared to play them."

Manning is not reported to have his sights set on San Francisco, but that could change if Smith decides to test the market.
