DENVER - The Diamondbacks will have to guarantee Richie Sexson more than one year in a contract extension to keep the slugging first baseman.
That is the message agent Casey Close delivered Monday to general manager Joe Garagiola Jr.
Arizona — which traded six players to Milwaukee in December for Sexson, Shane Nance and a minor leaguer — last week made its first formal proposal to the potential free agent.
That offer, a source said, was one year with vesting options (guaranteed based on playing time).
“They're going to look into a longer-term guarantee,” Close said Monday. “We really haven't got into a whole lot of dollars and cents yet.”
Garagiola declined to address specifics but said he hoped to have a response following the regular season.
“The discussion today was more focused on guarantee issues than anything else,” he said. “I want to keep this going.”
Arizona has exclusive negotiating rights with Sexson until 15 days after the World Series.
Sexson, making $8.6 million this year, hit nine homers and drove in 23 runs in 23 games before shoulder surgery ended his season. By all accounts, his recovery is going well. He left the team last week to continue his rehabilitation at home in Washington state.
