Shaq has experience, and he is still much bigger. Not worried until year three of Oden.

Oden is a great prespect, but Aldridge is the best inside guy for the time being.

Many people accuse the Suns of being overly reliant on rookies this year. But they are playing with a veteran team. The Blazers don't have a lot of experienced players for guys like Oden to learn from. It will be interesting to see how they do.

Let's wait until he plays a game before we suggest he may challenge shaq.

Aldrige has just scortched amare in their head to heads. Aldrige is the blazers "impact" big man. Oden will not be so easy to push around, but the blazers dont need much offense from him with Roy, aldrige, outlaw, Rudy Fernandez, and Bayless, they are stacked on O.

Didnt Oden just turn his ankle?? This guy needs to take better care of his body if he wants to win those 15 rings he promised.

Apr 16-
Amare: 12/2 (18 minutes)
Aldridge: 16/9 (44 minutes)

Winner: Amare from an efficiency standpoint

mar 18
-
amare: 25/7/2
aldridge: 31/8

Winner: Aldridge

mar 04-
amare: 22/7/4
aldridge: 11/9/3

Winner: Amare

i certainly beg to differ with the statement that Aldridge has scorched amare in any way, shape, or form.

Don't disrespect Shaquille O'Neal like that. Really...

Oden will probably average in his rookie year what shaq will average in the coming year. Oden is also probably better defensively when it comes to fundamentals.

Oden is a great physical prospect in that he's very big and still very mobile. His offensive "skill" remains to be seen because in college he just overwhemled people. The differential will be a lot smaller in the NBA.

So the april 16 game, the last game of the year, is pretty meaningless, for both teams, different reasons. In faceups, when amare did guard aldridge it wasnt pretty. In the march 4th game aldridge palyed 26 mins sat with foul trouble(5 fouls), and was ineffective on offense(3-15). In the march 18 game, aldridge shot 15-27, scoring at will in faceups with amare and diaw. Amare cannot guard aldridge off the dribble, he cant move his feet fast enough and aldrige has one of the best crossovers of any big man I've ever seen. Thats where the problem lies, and amare's not longer, so he cant intimidate him. Diaw does a better job position defending aldridge, but aldridge can shoot over him. Aldridge has a high release on his jump shot so he can shoot it right in your face. IMO lamarcus aldridge is the best young PF in the game today(outside amare), within 2 years he will be an all star, barring injury. The bulls are looking like total idiots for trading him for ty thomas.

It will be interesting to see how Lopez develops because he's the kind of defender who might help against Aldridge, but it may take a while. We need to remember that Amare is not really all that tall and while better footwork will help Amare probably has 6" less reach than Lopez.

I will tell you the one thing I liked out of Amare post the Shaq trade. He seemed to be meaner around the basket. I thought Amare throttled a bit back from his power game around the rim because playing centers night in and night out took a toll.

As soon as Amare was moved to the PF position, he seemed to be playing above the rim much more again. Now if Lopez actually turns out to be serviceable at the center position, that should free up Amare even when Shaq goes to the bench.

Say what you want about Amare and his defense. I still think he has the ability to get better. Especially, if he actually spends the entire season at his natural position most of the time.

IMHO, D'Antoni gave Amare mixed messages about how intense he should be on defense. The offense was built around him and having him on the court was a big deal. But then they teamed him up with little guys who couldn't defend the post. So while he did make too many dumb fouls due to being out of position, he never got clear marching orders.

Personal skills aside, I think the new scheme will help Amare a lot:

1. Easier to defend baseline: Amare had most of his problems on rotations to respond to guys going to the basket. In the new scheme he will not have as much territory to cover and not have to worry as much about getting caught in the paint.

2. Straight up post defense: With small ball, the post was generally fronted rather than played straight. With Shaq covering the big guy, Amare will not have to try to keep the big out of the post or respond when the ball gets beyond the fronting man. By playing straight, he will be in a better position to block out and to go for the ball when shot from the strong side. He will also be able to come across for weak side blocks than if he has to guard the post.

3. Less Problems with Guards in the Paint: Push guard to the baseline will create fewer one on one defensive calls in the paint against really quick players. The baseline will have a lot less room for the offensive player to maneuver.

4. Fewer Defensive Set: By playing so many double team sets, defensive responsibilities changed constantly. A simpler defense is easier to understand and take less time to respond.

Obviously the old cliches about energy and effort along with technique still matter a bunch. But this shceme seems better suited to the both Shaq and Amare than the old "push to the middle" scheme.
