ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Bryce Underwood made his Michigan football debut in front of some 40,000 fans as he led the Blue team to a 17-0 victory over the Maize team in the annual spring game. But that's not to say it was easy.
Underwood went 12-for-26 for 187 yards with one touchdown, one interception, and two sacks. He also added five carries for a net of five yards, but he scrambled once for 17 yards, negating some of the sack yardage.
Though it was something of an uneven performance, Underwood showed off his big arm, and even completed an 88-yard touchdown pass to close out the game. Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore said after the game that he liked his performance, but there are still things to work on before the Wolverines host New Mexico in August.
"Did well, made some really good throws and had some things that we got to clean up and get better at," Moore said. "But he's a continuing work in progress, and he's working his tail off to do it."
While players react differently once they make it to their respective college campuses, Moore says Underwood was as advertised. Really, the big thing he's asking of his star quarterback is that he doesn't wear himself out, because he's a tireless worker who strives to get better in every way.
"No, nothing's really surprised," Moore said. "I kind of had a good beat on how he would be, the work ethic. He's a night owl, that's true, so I try to get him to sleep more, but because he's in the building a lot, and he's doing a lot to get better, so, but nothing surprised me in the way he carries himself, and what he does. Just knowing his family, his mom and dad, Jay and Beverly, just an outstanding job raising a young man, and it's been awesome to have him around."
So what has been the adjustment for the former No. 1 player in the country? Moore says that he's seen Underwood acclimate well to the team, coming in with humility and little ego, and he's appreciated his progress.
"I mean, probably the biggest piece is just the knowledge of knowing where he's going, what's going on, his teammates, and watching the other teammates grow towards him," Moore said. "Because you're coming with a guy that's such highly ranked and highly touted, so easily for a lot of guys to deflect and not want him to be a part of the team, and they've just embraced him like they embrace everybody else. And he's embraced the team, and he's very humble, very selfless. So that's been probably the biggest thing to watch.
"And then from the football standpoint, there's a countless number of things that he's watched and seen -- knowledge of playbook and things like that. But we continue this process as we go into the summer."
Now that the spring game is done, the Wolverines won't take the field again until fall camp commences in August.
