Hall of Famer
Okay, amazingly enough this rant is about basketball and not football.
I've been reading a lot of basketball and football news the last few months. As a big Cardinals and Suns fan, this is not unusual. What I do find amazing though is how uneducated the Suns fans on this board seem to be and how much more knowledgable the Cards fans seem to be.
What gives?
Why on Earth there are any fans obsessed with Kobe Bryant, who may not be in the league next year, is beyond me. He is not a guy I can get behind and root for. Sure, he'll bring us some wins, but I don't want my students, kids, family holding this guy up as someone to get behind.
More baffling to me is the desire to trade away our team to get McGrady. He has proven that he has all of the basketball gifts in the world and still is unable to make his team a winner. Bah, why don't we try for Iverson while we are at it.
We have a lot of money this off-season and not a lot of talent to go for. Our fans seem to expect that if we don't spend it all on a top level free agent, of which there isn't one to grab thats worthy, we blew this off-season. Here is a shocker, lets not spend it all or force a trade that is not in our best interest.
The other thing about all of these 'we must get so and so' threads that I am seeing that baffle me, is all of the guys we 'must' get are guards. I will take a pair of good guards versus great ones every day. Unless you are Michael Jordan, one great guard is not enough.
The talent on the Suns is very young and very deep. We need excellent coaching and a few years. Amare came out of High School, Johnson and Jacobson are young. Marion isn't exactly an old man. We have talent, we have the opportunity to add a lot of talent to what we have without selling the future. What the Suns need most is to avoid long term deals with players that may take us for a huge contract without contributing. McGrady is one injury away from being Grant Hill. Kobe may be in jail this time next year. Lets hold off on selling the farm to a guard who may not get the job done on the court or off.
A parting shot. Why does everyone hate the trade the Suns made? We dumped the 7th pick in a very thin draft and picked up a second round pick and a very likely lottery selection next year! I thought we smoked the Bulls in that trade. Every time I watched a team yesterday trade for a future first round pick, I couldn't help but htink what a great move that team made.
Ah well. I guess I just don't understand basketball, but then I'm in the camp that thinks we have a bargain in Shawn Marion. Go figure.
