Earlier this week, Colorado announced it would be retiring the numbers of Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders. The news sparked debate on social media. Most fans understood Hunter getting his number retired, but some questioned the Buffaloes' decision to retire Sanders' jersey.
College football programs don't retire numbers at the rate of professional teams. A lot of that is due to the volume of players on a team. It's also hard to build the level of legend in college that you can build as a pro. You can only do so much in four years or less.
LSU football only has three retired numbers -- Billy Cannon (20), Tommy Casanova (37), and Jerry Stovall (21).
The recent news of Sanders' number retirement begs the question: Should LSU retire Joe Burrow's number?
Burrow donned the No. 9 at LSU from 2018-19. He was one of the best quarterbacks in college football history, leading LSU's historic offense in 2019 on his way to going 15-0 and winning a national title. Burrow checks all the boxes when it comes to legacy. He put up big numbers, won a lot of games, was a team leader, and has reached myth status in Baton Rouge. He's the type of figure teams build statues for.
The resume stacks up with Cannon, Casanova, and Stovall. I don't think any LSU fan would question Burrow's deservingness in this regard.
If LSU retires the No. 9, you could argue the Tigers' should also retire Jayden Daniels' No. 5. If we retire the number of every elite player coming through Baton Rouge, we'll run out of single digits.
But Burrow's case is different. You can't overstate the impact he made on LSU and the sport. I don't think it will happen anytime soon, but when Burrow wraps up his NFL career, you might see a No. 9 plaque up there with 20, 37, and 21.
