Would help the Suns get some talent and not be over the cap. I don't know if thats even possible (I dont remember anyone restructuring contracts to free up cap space) and I also think Shaq would say "why don't you ask someone else to," but it would be a good way to get a few good pieces to add to a team that is win now anyway.

I'm pretty sure you can't do that in the NBA.

Shaq: why don't you ask someone else to
Sarver: Because you make 20 million and you suck.

I can't find the proof on google, but he did decide or suggest, on his own, to take less money for the overall welfare of the team (Miami Heat) at one point

With the current situation of his marital affairs, i doubt it and i dont expect him to, he didnt force himself on the Sun and all this debacle his definetly not because of him.

Hardly feasible technically.

Shaq waived his option year of 30 mil in exchange for a new 100mil for 5 years deal. With his age, postponing payment into later years can't be done anymore.

I didn't say he has to, I just said he did something similar a few years ago.

He kind of did. He signed a lower per-year extension in exchange for getting a longer contract. It allowed the heat to add more per-year salary to the team without going over the luxury tax.

You are not allowed to re-structure contracts in the NBA. Once the deal is signed, the player is on that payment schedule until the contract expires or he is bought out and subsequently waived.

It can't be done in the NBA... or can it?

If both parties absolve themselves of the contract (a la Derek Fisher) and then he just resigned another one.

It might be possible to get around this in the current CBA. Not sure.

I think you could do this as long as it includes an extension. However, I think Shaq has made it pretty clear he doesn't plan on playing beyond his contract. By all accounts he doesn't want to give up his remaining salary and doesn't want to play for 3 more years.

So restructuring extension or whatever sounds out of the question.

Probably not, but with Kerr running the Suns it probably solidifies it can't be done. Also I think the Suns could have at least gotten a draft pick from New York. I read some article (believe in a New York paper) that said the Suns weren't even asking compensation for D'Antoni. It lead me to the impression this was really a sweet deal for New York. What bothers me especially about Kerr is that he does not place value on the Suns assets.

I think that it is public knowledge about how bad the Suns wanted to get rid of D'Antoni though. If there was a value for D'Antoni, the rest of the league had to see it as pretty low IMO.

Im not sure on this but I know if you retire early ..you are still on the salary cap of the team until the end of your contract...just like Van Horn being tradded to the Nets from Mavericks after he retired.

Again.. I dont want to start anything with you..but do you really hate Shaq that much that you follow every story that is related to him and post about it..or do you really just care about Shaq? No pun intended..just really curious and confused.

That was different though because Van Horn just told the Mavs he was retired, he didn't formally retire. Retiring wouldn't be necessary though, as we learned from the Utah/Fisher thing, a contract can be voided if both sides consent. Fisher didn't count against Utah's cap and neither would Shaq, but it would require Shaq to agree to it, and that won't happen.

What would have to happen is, the Suns would release Shaq, Shaq would waive the rest of his salary, and then the Suns would re-sign Shaq as a free agent for a more reasonable contract. There MIGHT be a rule against the player re-signing with the team that released him though, I don't know if the NBA would allow that. Fisher was going to another team, I have never heard of a team and player consenting to a mutual departure so they could re-sign a new deal.

Sadly for the Suns, the question is moot anyway, there is no way Shaq would agree to it. Shaq isn't the type of player to take one for the team.

Who in their right mind gives up 40 million dollars over the next 2 years when you're at the tail end of your career?

lol.. well said.

Nobody and I mean nobody will voluntarily restructure their contract DOWN from 20 million. They get used to the lifestyle it can afford, depend on it and adjust their life to it. It's much harder than people realize. I mean, It'd be cool if he would do that to say.. down around 13 million a year. But.. someone at the twilight of his/her career is even more concerned with getting as much money as possible for their future.

Didn't Duncan do this last year?

i want to say that Duncan had a player option that he chose not to exercise.

therefore he technically became a FA, but was ready to resign with the team.

Shaq did something similar a few years ago when he resigned with the Heat. took less money, but for a longer amount of time.

lets say, just for example, instead of 3 years and $60mil, something like 4 years and $70mil.

maybe Shaq and Kerr can get a third party to help out.

For instance, do the Derek Fisher thing and have both sides agree to dissolve the contract. Shaq is now a FA, and then have someone like Miami or another third party sign Shaq to the desired contract and trade him to PHX. Maybe PHX can unload something they don't want anyway
