Sean is not getting any younger and I was wondering if you think the Coyotes should trade Sean now to get some young talent. There should be some teams that really would want him.

The problem is that I don't know if many teams would be willing to take on his salary with the Collective Bargaining Agreement expiring on 9/15/04, and the pending lock-out if no deal is reached...

If however everything is settled before the trading deadline, and if the Coyotes are out of post-season contention by then, then there's a chance of Burke being traded. The Coyotes definitely would get a lot of draft-choices in return....Would Boucher be good enough (yeah 2 consecutive shut-outs) to be the #1 goalie, and can Bierk remain healthy enough to be a dependable #2? Those are other factors that enter into the equation..

Trading Burke right now would be a huge mistake. Contrary to what we think, I don't think we'd get a lot of young talent for him. His market value is much lower than what he is worth to us. That's the only reason why he hasn't been traded already. That's the reason he wasn't traded last year. Maybe come trade deadline that will change and someone will get desperate.

And I'm not ready to hang our future on Boucher just yet. He's on an impressive run right now but he still hasn't proved beyond a doubt that he capable of being this team's number one. I'd like to see us trade Bierk.

Burke will not be traded until the Coyotes are out of the playoff race.

Although if the Coyotes asure themselves a playoff spot by the trade deadline and Boucher keeps playing like he has been, they may trade Burke in March when another team doesn't have to pay a lot of his salary.

True, but how many years are remaining on Burke's contract? The problem is that most teams will be hesitant to trade for any lucrative contract until the CBA is resolved.... Even if Burke's contract did expire this year, would someone be willing to give him a long-term deal?

Also, I must admit that I'm not familiar with any of the Coyote's top Minor League goalie prospects, but would any of them be ready for the NHL if they do indeed decide to trade Burke, and either Boucher or Bierke got injured?

I think what might also dictate Burke's fate is where Curtis Joseph ends up, because the Wings are very particular on who they end up in exchange for him....

But, considering Burke's level of play his contract is not excessive or lucrative. If Sean Burke is the player that improves the Flyers' chances of winning the Stanley Cup Bobby Clarke will be happy to take on the 1 remaining year of his contract at $4.25 million ... especially since they will be dropping Jeff Hackett and his $3.0 million contract this summer.

Yeah Burke's salary is definitely not too high but apparently Barnett’s asking price is (Which may be a first). I could still see Colorado, St. Louis, or Boston make a run at him come deadline time, especially if we're out of the playoffs.

Okay, since Burke only has 1-yr remaining on his contract, then it wouldn't be difficult to deal him as I originally thought.....

I still contend that will ultimately dictate where the Coyotes would trade him (if they're eliminated from play-off contention before the deadline and do indeed decide to let him go) is where Curtis Joseph ends-up....The Wings are at a point where they'd be willing to accept almost anything in return for him....He was linked to both the Bruins and Capitals before the season began... They definitely wouldnt trade him to a Western Conference rival....

The Flyers as a possibility? I know both Hackett and Esche struggled yesterday, but I believe they have enough faith in riding Esche into the play-offs since their explosive offense compensates for not being that spectaculor....

Colorado? That's definitely a possibility since Aebischer and Sauve lack that necessary play-off experience, but dont know if the Coyotes would want to deal him w/in the conference....

St. Louis? Osgood and Brent Johnson are fairly adequate and have been play-off tested before...Yes, Osgood has struggled in crucial situations, but with their solid defense, he isnt too much of a liability there...

Boston? That's probably where some veteran goalie will end up before the trading deadline because Raycroft is too young and Felix Potvin has choked so many times before that it's unreal....

I just hope this C.B.A. situation is resolved because hockey can't afford another lock-out.....

I have to disagree Louie. Maybe in the beginning of the year they were desperate to get rid of him but right now I don't think they're desperate at all. Hasek's groin has caused major problems in the past in Buffalo and could cause a problem in Detroit as well. It's anyone guess whether he will be able to hold up deep into the playoffs. I don't think Hasek is the clear number one right now. Not trading Cujo may turn out to be a blessing in disguise for Detroit. IMHO, I don't think Cujo is going anywhere and I really don't think Detroit is even shopping him anymore.

The Wings have Manny Legace who could possibly be the #1 goalie for half the teams in the league...He had been regulated to #3 when they began to showcase Cujo, but then returned back to #2 when Hasek's injury began to affect him.... There is plenty of time between now and the trading deadline (isnt it the 3rd week of March?), and if Hasek can revert back to his '02 form before then, and if Legace continues his above-average play, they'll be in the best position to trade CuJo......

Yet, I've addressed this on other forums in the past....Hasek only has 1-year on his contract, and I wouldn't be shocked if he does decide to retire again...If that's the case along with the Wings trading CuJo, they'll be stuck with Legace (which wouldnt be too bad since he deserves the chance), but unprovens in the back-up role.....

If they thought Legace could lead them to the cup they never would have thrown all that money at Cujo. Legace is a solid back up and maybe could be a starter. But Detroit expects the wings to go deep in the playoffs every year, if not win it all. That would be a pretty good gamble making Legace their number one. Who knows though, that's pretty much what the Avs are doing right now.

I still say Cujo isn't going anywhere this year and will probably be their starter next year.

Boucher just got his third consecutive shutout in a row as the Coyotes beat Carolina 3-0.

Mike Ilitch (owner of the Red Wings) was faced with a difficult...
If you recall, Scotty Bowman immediately retired after they won the 2002 Stanley Cup, and then of course Hasek announced his retirement a few weeks later....Ilitch didn't want rookie coach
Dave Lewis beginning his career with Legace as his starter, and the fact that they didn't have any proven goalie prospects in their minor league system didn't make any matters better... Since he knew that would cause the team to press, and the fans to lose faith in the team, they immediately went out and signed
CuJo.......

I have faith that for this year at least, a tandem of Hasek/Legace can get them far into the play-offs, but it's still difficult to discuss next year until they resolve the issue of the C.B.A....Otherwise there will be a lock-out.....

If everything is rectified before the trade deadline, then CuJo will be traded....If Hasek doesn't return back for 04-05, the Wings would then pursue another top-flight goalie, perhaps even Burke? But it's too premature to speculate on this until we know if any lock-out is adverted....

Legace is not a goalie who can win you 16 playoff games. They will keep Joseph until Hasek proves he is ready to ge through the playoffs. Joseph, if he is traded won't be dealt until the trading deadline.

We don't know exactly if thats true in terms of Legace being unable to win 16 play-off games, however, as I said earlier all of this is moot until a new Collective Bargaining Agreement can be reached, or no trades of significance will be completed until then......

Yes, we do know it is true about Legace. If the Red Wings had any thought of Legace being able to win 16 playoffs games they never would have thrown that abscene amount of money at Joseph 2 summers ago. Legace is not a #1 goalie. He is a very good #2 goalie. When Hasek went down earlier this season who became Detroit's #1 goalie? Not Legace, but Joseph.

As I said earlier, the Red Wing's ownership faced a lot of pressure, which forced them immediately go out and sign Joseph, plus not having much goaltending depth beyond Legace didn't help much either...

Joseph became the #1 goalie after Hasek got injured is because they had to showcase him for a potential trade...He had that injury which affected his redeemable value, but with giving him the opportunity to play and to prove he's overcome that, it will upgrade his value again instantly....

Actually, I meant to type "wasn't" Legace injured. That's why Cujo was recalled so quickly after being sent down.

You're right...I had forgotten about that... I had a link, but it didn't work...Here's the story cut-and-pasted....

DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings made several roster moves on Tuesday to compensate for injuries.

First, the Red Wings recalled defenseman Niklas Kronwall and forward Kevin Miller from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League, assigned forward Nathan Robinson to Grand Rapids and placed defenseman Chris Chelios on injured reserve.

Chelios suffered a sprained knee in Monday's contest against Los Angeles and is expected to be out of the lineup between three and four weeks.

Miller leads the Griffins with 18 points (10-8--18) in 24 games with the Griffins while Kronwall is tied for fourth with Robinson at 13 points (2-11--13) in 25 contests.

Next, the Red Wings recalled forward Jiri Hudler from Grand Rapids and placed Steve Thomas on injured reserve.

Thomas will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Thursday. He is expected to be out of the lineup between five and six weeks.

Hudler is currently second in scoring for the Griffins with four goals and 12 assists for 16 points in just 15 games while earning a plus-11 mark.

And finally, the Red Wings recalled goaltenders Curtis Joseph and Joey MacDonald from Grand Rapids. Goaltender Dominik Hasek will be out of the lineup through the weekend after re-aggravating his groin injury during Monday night's game against the Los Angeles Kings. Goaltender Manny Legace is day to day after injuring his knee during warm-ups Monday night.

Re-capping the transactions: the Red Wings placed Chris Chelios and Steve Thomas on injured reserve; assigned Nathan Robinson to Grand Rapids; recalled Kevin Miller, Niklas Kronwall, Jiri Hudler, Curtis Joseph and Joey MacDonald from Grand Rapids.

RED WINGS INJURY STATUS
Derian Hatcher – Knee (10/16) I.R., Out four-to-six months
Steve Yzerman – Groin Day-to-day
Chris Chelios – Knee (12/8) I.R., Out four-to-six weeks
Darren McCarty – Back (11/8) I.R., Out indefinitely
Steve Thomas – Knee (12/8) I.R., Out five-to-six weeks
Manny Legace – Knee (12/8) Day-to-day
Dominik Hasek – Groin Out one week
Henrik Zetterberg – Leg (11/4) I.R., Out four-to-six weeks
Ray Whitney – Groin Day-to-day
Tomas Holmstrom – Shoulder (11/26) I.R., Out four-to-six weeks

I apologize if this turned into a thread that didn't pertain to the Coyotes and Burke.... To get back to the original topic....It doesnt hurt to keep both Burke/Boucher for another reason.... Both will spur each other on to play better, to motivate them to the highest level...If you traded either one, one may become too complacent... Look at other teams in the league who "ride the hot hand" of goalies (Wild immediately come to mind), it gives them a 1/2 punch and none would tire out when play-off time arrives....

Yeah, plus would Bierk be able (once healthy) to be a dependable #2? That's another issue....

My thought is to keep them both and keep Zac in Springy until the deadline - then choose.

At this point I say Boosh will stay but who knows. Look at the trade that brought Burkie here for Shtalenkov

The entire NHL knew Burke was a betetr goalie then Shtalenkov ... even the Panthers knew that. The deal was that Luongo was the #1 in Florida and Burke was getting paid $1 million more then Shtalenkov. Hence, the trade.
