If their history, and the recent comments of tri-GM John Ricco, are any indication, the Mets will pass on the toughest short- and long-term choice, a full rebuild in which they give up Jacob deGrom and/or Noah Syndergaard, and go with the plan that is the easiest to implement yet the least likely to succeed: Dealing walk-year veterans and a controllable mid-rotation starting pitcher such as Steven Matz or Zack Wheeler with an eye on competing again next season. “I think for right now, we’re looking at, because of the makeup of our team and the fact that we have guys like Noah and Jake at the top of the rotation, if we add the right pieces around them, we can be competitive really quickly,” Ricco said during his first press conference as tri-GM on July 6.
