What does the value chart say about moving up to around pick #24?
#24 is worth 740 value points.
#41 is worth 490. #73 is worth 225.
Which means we'd have to part with our 2nd and 3rd round pick in order to move up to the #24 hole in Round One.
This is a deep draft. To me, it consists of (a) roughly 8 guys most would consider elite (Bush, Ferguson, Leinart, Hawk, M Williams, W Davis and you could throw in Cutler and Huff) plus (b) roughly another 120 players who are slightly less talented but equal in value.
To me the suggests that, if we can't get one of (who we feel is) the elite-eight at #10, we should try to trade down within the first three rounds for one more additional picks, because we still have several roster holes to fill.
It also suggests that we shouldn't trade 2 picks of relatively equal value in order to move up to grab a late 1st round pick fairly equal to the other two in value.
I'd like to see us come out of the draft with (1) one or two good offensive linemen, (2) a quality TE, (3) a QBOF, (4) another quality NT and (5) less crucial - additional help at LB and S.
To fill all those needs (and assuming we're surefooted at every stage of the draft), we'd have to obtain good value with our picks in rounds 1, 2,3 and 4 plus hope to get lucky in rounds 5 or 6.
That's why I think we'd be better off with more picks rather than fewer - or at least retain the ones we have now.
