Variety reports that DreamWorks has hired Tim Sullivan to write the script for Shrek 4. DreamWorks Animation's "Shrek" franchise has generated over $1.6 billion of consumer home entertainment spending and the studio is nearing pre-production on Shrek 3, written by Peter Seaman and Jeffrey Price (the duo behind How the Grinch Stole Christmas).
The trade says Sullivan landed the deal by working on several feature animated projects for Jeffrey Katzenberg. Sullivan was invited to pitch a take for a fourth film, and the studio sparked to his idea.
The hire comes after DreamWorks secured screenwriter David H. Steinberg to write Puss In Boots, a spinoff involving the character voiced by Antonio Banderas in Shrek 2.
Shrek 3 is currently scheduled for a May 18, 2007 release. Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and Banderas are returning to voice the signature characters. (ASFN thread)
Sullivan also wrote Personal Shopping, a film he will direct for producer Scott Rudin at Paramount Pictures.
