While Shrek the Third isn't even out in theatres yet, the DreamWorks Animation team is already working on Shrek 4. When ComingSoon.net visited PDI (Pacific Design Images) in the Bay area recently, production designed Guillaume Aretos was really tight-lipped about the film, but he did say it was definitely in the works.

"We know there is a 'Shrek 4' and I know the story. It's actually very good and very funny," he confessed. But, when asked if it's in pre-production, Aretos smiled and said, "I am going to use the Scooter Libby thing. I do not recall."

I loved Shrek and Shrek 2 was even better, but continuing to make sequels will probably ruin it...they got lucky the sequel was as good the first time but it's doubtful it happens again.

Mike Myers jumped the shark.

I am so sick of anything that he's a part of.

So even members of the creative team admit they're attempting to beat/milk the characters to death just to profit from it?

That's too bad.

Whatever happened to just allowing a good concept to exit gracefully?

Alex Litel's Lackluster Emporium has come upon a copyright pre-registration for DreamWorks Animation's Shrek Goes Fourth which may give our first look where the studio is headed with the story:

After challenging an evil dragon, rescuing a beautiful princess and saving your in-laws' kingdom, what's an ogre to do? Well, if you're Shrek, you suddenly wind up a domesticated family man. Instead of scaring villagers away like he used to, a reluctant Shrek now agrees to autograph pitch forks. What's happened to this ogre's roar? Longing for the days when he felt like a "real ogre," Shrek is duped into signing a pact with the smooth-talking dealmaker, Rumplestiltskin. Shrek suddenly finds himself in a in a twisted, alternate version of Far Far Away, where ogres are hunted, Rumplestiltskin is king and Shrek and Fiona have never met. Now, it's up to Shrek to undo all he's done in the hopes of saving his friends, restoring his world and reclaiming his one True Love.

DreamWorks Animation is eyeing a May 21, 2010 release in conventional and IMAX theaters.

Shrek: The Final Chapter

Release Date: May 21, 2010 (3D/2D theaters and IMAX 3D)
Studio: DreamWorks Animation
Director: Mike Mitchell
Screenwriter: Tim Sullivan, Josh Klausner
Genre: Animation, Comedy, Fantasy
MPAA Rating: PG (for mild action, some rude humor and brief language)
Website: Shrek.com

Starring: Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, Antonio Banderas, Jon Hamm, Kathy Griffin, Kristen Schaal

Plot Summary: Shrek is feeling over-domesticated in the fourth installment. He has lost his roar. It used to send villagers running away in terror. Now they run to him and ask him to sign their pitchforks and torches. To regain his ogre mojo, he strikes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin. The pact goes awry and Shrek must confront what life would be like in Far Far Away if he had never existed. That translates into Donkey being forced into cart-pulling duty, fat and lazy Puss in Boots trading his sword for a pink bow and the underhanded Rumpelstiltskin ruling the kingdom.

Took the kids to see this one over the weekend.

I was really disappointed with the two shrek movies that followed the original. So much so that I wasn't that interested in seeing this final chapter. Still the kids wanted to see a movie and this was the only one that fit the bill.

I must say that I was pleasantly surprised with this final Shrek movie. It rivaled the original IMO. My kids were kind of iffy on it. They are 3 and 6 years old. They were kind of tired and the theater was really crowded which didn't help. Plus the movie felt a little more geared towards an older crowd. Which made it enjoyable for the parents in attendance.

Still if you are a Shrek fan you will really enjoy this movie. I really feel that this final chapter regained some of the Original's magic.

I'm with you on this. Although I did like the Shrek 2 (and thought the last 45 minutes of that movie were GREAT) I thought Shrek 3 was just flat out awful. This was just a good, fun ride. Surprising to say the least.

Yeah Sherk 2 was decent. Puss in Boots was a great addition and the movie had it's moments. However after that 3rd one I thought the franchise was done for.

I took my kids to see this movie and family enjoyed it. We all agreed this was funnier and better then the last one. None of us really liked the last film. Puss in Boots was freaking hilarious in this movie. We simply enjoyed this one much more then the last one and it was a worthy finale for the Shrek franchise.

My only complaint was that the 3D got a little blurry during fast action sequences. It's almost as if they didn't take the time to polish the 3D effects in this one. It wasn't bad but just unpolished.

Overall though if your a Shrek fan, you will enjoy this last chapter IMO.

Good stuff. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it. A nice end for the franchise.
