I'm looking to expand my xbox horizons. Right now it's really only a Madden machine.

I loved Civ on the PC...has anyone played the console version?

I don't see how it would translate to console. There are too many things to control and I think it that would be too cumbersome with an xbox controller.

BTW, here's the PC version for anyone that's interested:

I dug it up a few months ago and played for a couple of weeks. I'm sure I'll do the same next year.

I also played the demo and I thought it was pretty good. Quite "cartoony" compared to the PC versions of the game (some attempts at humor that could get old after a while), but it a different target audience IMO. But it still felt solid. If you have Live, grab the demo and give it a spin. Since I own all of the PC versions, I will wait until it hits the $30 or $20 price point before picking it up for the kids to play - they don't touch my computer. :)

is how I would describe it also.

The advisors kind of bugged me.
That was the case with one of the more recent PC versions, too, right? I had one where I thought that about my advisors (those wusses never wanted to take any chances).

Anyone try this, yet?

I have it for PS3. I played the demo and loved it and went right out and bought the game. Unfortunately, I played a few campaings and got bored with it. Games on the console version only last a few hours. This is because the maps are way smaller and there is far less depth in gameplay. I can say, though, that when I get the itch too play a civ style game, this game will do the trick. It just isnt a game you will probably play more than every once in a while because the lack of depth breeds an increase in redundancy.

Thanks. I only play video games once in a while anyways, so this will probably do just fine for me.

Do you want to sell me your Civ game? I only ask because it sounds like you probably don't play it anymore.

I really don't play it much. It is PS3 though so your xbox collection would remain limited. Pm me if you are interested.

Yeah, I have it. I like it a lot, especially because you can play a two hour game and be done.

I'm addicted to it, been playing it for about a month. While it is a bit cartoony, the colors are just sick in HD. Gameplay can be sped-up by just hitting O (PS3) whenever the advisors pop up. I can usually beat it on King with just about any civ in about 3 hrs. On deity I get crushed, quick. I find that older civs, Romans, Egyptians, Greeks tend to fare better in the harder levels because they are fast starters as compared to say the US.

For anyone who is a fan of the original SNES version, I downloaded SNesoid for my Android phone for $4. Then free downloads of ROMs for SNES. I've been playing civ on my phone constantly for the past week.

Bought it, but I too love the PC version more. It is kind of dumbed-down. For instance, instead of creating workers to build roads or mine resources, the game pretty much automatically does this for you. On the PC version, I had to hold roads and resources strategically. In the console version, it really doesn't matter.

The games are also much shorter. You can go through an entire game in a couple of hours.

That being said, hte replay-ability of this game is phenominal. I constantly cycle back to it when I finish off one title and am waiting for a new one to come out. And the expansion packs make it even more interesting because some of the scenarios do require more strategy.

All-in-all, it translates okay to the console, but I wish it was just as complex and time-consuming as the PC version. I think it was worth the money, but the stripped-down version left me wanting more. I think they sacrificed alot of the complexity for superior graphics.

I am hoping he can get Civ III into an XBOX version with all its bells and whistles someday.
