Will be travelling back East later this year during key NFL season, should be gone six weeks or so. I'm using this trip as an excuse :) to purchase a satellite radio and figure a plug and play the way to go. Does anyone have any input/advice on what model or the process itself before I make a decision?

This is a good question.

I would be interested in getting one too. How does the merger affect the stations?

I have had both XM (plug and play) and Sirius (integrated with the dash). Frankly, I can't live without my satellite radio.

First off, there is not a whole lot of difference in the programming. With each, you get about 150+ channels and anything you would ever want to listen to from Music to Talk to Sports to Politics to weather. And the reception works great anywhere in the country, so long as you have a clear view of the sky. Satellite will not work in a tunnel or parking garage or your garage, whereas AM/FM will work.

The only difference is that with Sirius you get Howard Stern and the NFL network, with XM you get Opie and Anthony and Fox Sports Radio. Other than that, not a big difference. Not sure how the merger will work with programming. I have heard rumors that you will now get them all with the merger, but not sure.

Personally, I prefer the integrated, but it came with the new car. The plug and plays are fine and I would not go out and get a new car to get Satellite radio. With plug and play, you generally run power into your cig lighter, and another cord with a magnetic antenna that you just route thru your window. Lugging them around is not as easy as something built-in, but for the price, that would probably be the way to go if you don't need a new car. Plus you can move them to any car or a rental if you want.

They are real easy to activate. Just have your radio id and a credit card, and they turn them on within 3-5 minutes and you are good to go. I think they are both around $12/mo. I paid for 2 years of service just once and I got the rate down to about $9/mo, since I know I am not going to cancel.

I have the Sirius Sportster and I love it. I have it hooked up to my surround sound through a home docking station and also in my wife's car since we use it for road trips. It is great to have the option in both places, plus I can access it through the internet at work.

One other difference between XM and Sirius is that XM has MLB. I had XM and really enjoyed the MLB, but I switched to Sirius when Howard Stern moved the Sirius. And I like having the NFL games. I think it will be great when the merger goes through and you will get the best of both systems.

I like them both equally...I liked some of the XM music stations a bit more than Sirius at first, but Sirius has added some stations.

If we do get both for the price of one, I'll probably subscribe.

Ditto I have the sportster the install took about 10 minutes mine's not a professional job the wire is quite visible but it doesn't bug me and it's been like that for about 3 years without any issues with the wire.

I do lose reception quite a bit either near power lines, trees or in certain stretches of say Walnut Creek but overall I love it.

I have listened to many Cards games on it.

I've had Sirius for about four years and absolutely love it.

NFL Radio alone is worth the money.

I own 975 shares of Sirius stock, please for the love of my children's college please sign up, and tell your friends.

My dream would be for this merger to go through quickly and the stocks to rise around 10 bucks. If it went to 20 I would probably die of shock

I thought the merger was a done deal -- not so? What's the status? I've had Sirius in a rental car twice now, and to my surprise, really liked it. I thought about getting it, but figured to wait for merged programming.

It needs to pass FCC approval. There was a DOJ ruling that allowed it to go through as it declared it to not be a monopoly. The stocks didn't do too much after that ruling
