PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia 76ers are giving young players an opportunity to get reps and minutes at the NBA level due to the number of injuries they have had to battle through in the 2024-25 season. With nine games left in what has been a disastrous season, it gives coach Nick Nurse and Co. the chance to look at players who would not be given this opportunity under normal circumstances.

For example, a player like Jalen Hood-Schifino is getting an opportunity on a two-way deal. A former first-round pick of the Los Angeles Lakers, Hood-Schifino has been battling an illness as of late, but he has shown the Sixers some positive things such as being able to put the ball on the floor and get to his spots on the offensive end as well as an ability to shoot the ball and run the point guard spot.

"I thought he played really well in his first few games with us," Nurse said. "I thought he really was getting to some spots with the ball and his shots. It was pure. I don’t think he’s felt that great lately physically, but again, he’s gotta go out there and gotta play, and him, the situation he’s in, and I just hope that maybe these couple days he can get back to feeling a little bit better because I really did like his pop with the basketball and where he was taking it to get shots off and do that to get the 3-ball as well."

Hood-Schifino shot 6-for-12 from deep over the first two games of Philadelphia's recent 6-game road trip against the Dallas Mavericks and the Houston Rockets. He then showed off an ability to handle the ball and run some offense off the bench throughout the rest of the trip before dealing with an illness that held him out against the Washington Wizards on Wednesday.

Over the final nine games, Nurse would like to see more of the youngster from Indiana.

"He does got some size," Nurse added. "He’s got a really good handle. Like, really good. Like, pressure up the floor doesn’t bother him. He just really got that thing on a string, and we got a good chance to see him at the point guard, too, which I think he’s got good size for that position."

The Sixers will take on the Miami Heat on Saturday and the Toronto Raptors on Sunday at home as they continue to play out the string and see what youngsters like Hood-Schifino can do at the NBA level.
