The Yankees entered Wednesday on their best 17-game stretch since 1953, winners of seven straight games and tied with the Red Sox atop the AL East. Aaron Boone said before Wednesday’s game against Boston in The Bronx that Greg Bird would need a rehab of “10 to 20 days, depending how it goes” when he begins a rehab assignment in the minors, which should start any day. Of course, Bird’s injury history should make anyone cautious about looking too far ahead, though both the first baseman and the team are confident the latest procedure, which removed a spur, will put his ankle issues to rest. Heading into Wednesday, even with Tyler Austin hitting fairly well and Neil Walker showing signs of improvement at the plate, Yankees first basemen had combined for just a .698 OPS, which was 22nd in the majors.
