We are going to get rid of some really ancient management software, still running off Windows 98, and move into the 21st century with our computers.

I'm going to want to network 4-5 workstations. My biggest concern is that almost all new computers come with Vista and I've heard that Vista is a pain in the neck. I can order from Dell and get Windows XP. Any comments on the operating systems or other suggestions on networking considerations are appreciated.

Get Windows XP Service Pack 2.

As far as networking...I'd just do a router to the internet, with a firewall of course, connect everyone to that, and make your computers available on the network so you can see each other.

If at all possible, get XP PRO. It will make your life (well, computer networking anyway) easier.
