Smithsburg girls 4x800 relay team sets county record at Adidas Indoor Nationals

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. —Smithsburg seniors Grace Ellis, Cora Gentzel, Ella Fisher and Kayla Hawbecker made their final high school indoor track & field competition one to remember Sunday.

Competing in the girls 4x800 relay at the Adidas Indoor Nationals, the Leopards quartet won the National Elite division and set a Washington County indoor record in 9:47.02.

The previous county record was 9:48.54, set by Boonsboro's Kortney Cunningham, Haley Wright, Ella Hawkins and Meggan Grams in 2014.

The four Smithsburg seniors also teamed to win the MPSSAA Class 1A state title in 9:58.92 in February.

North Hagerstown's Lauren Stine, Anna Chamberlin, Ella Hajel and Rian Johnson ran the previous season-best time of 9:51.47 during the Central Maryland Conference championships in January.

Smithsburg's boys 4x800 relay team of Tyler Younker, Camilo Malott, Dylan Herbst and Luke Gentzel finished second in the National Elite division in 8:21.88, the fourth-fastest time indoors in county history.

Gentzel finished seventh in the National Elite girls mile in 5:18.33. Last week, she signed to compete for Division I Radford.
