So what if PP returns...

...and our defense with him suddenly turns into a serviceable unit?

If that's the case, we should give him a final big contract. The cap space is there to pull it off starting with next season. We don't have any noteable star players to pay in the near future and tons of cap space. A true #1 lockdown CB can totally change how Vance Joseph can run this defense. You can stack the box more often and play more aggressive blitz pressure schemes. Front seven talent is still an issue, but with PP and Murphy at #2 we seem to be in good shape at CB.

It won’t... we still have poo DL and poo LBers and our S unit is little to be desired... it may “help” but this defense won’t suddenly turn serviceable.

Pp seems to have little regret about suspension, also trade demand last year. I hoped maybe this would tighten up his attitude about the Cardinals - see no reason to believe that, he don’t care like the honey badger, plays for money not fans. Yea he’s still good, but if Great, why the PHD? I don’t like cheaters - playing against legends like Larry. Just don’t - sue me.

I don’t think one great player is going to turn this defense into a serviceable unit.

I think he very well could. Trickle down effect of locking down one receiver man on man. Takes away an easy option for the QB and gives another second or two for Chandler and Sizz to work the rush.

I don't think he will make that much of a difference TBH; I think we will still be an abysmal defensive unit. Are we better with him? Sure, but I don't think it's going to turn us into a playoff team. Plus, how motivated is this dude going to be coming back to this train wreck of a team?

We don't know how Vance will use him. Doesn't Vance like to use a lot of zone? PP win't have a significant impact in zone coverage.

i believe he prefers a man to man defense but with our top two corners out we may not be running it that way/

Very pessimistic opinions in here. Even we as big fans seem to have a short memory...

PP is easily a top 5 CB in this league. A true shutdown CB in man coverage. Vance Joseph likes playing man all across and heavy pressure, although with our current CBs we have to play more zone and give them help. PP is one of the few players in the NFL who alters the way you can run your defense. He can erase the #1 WR, which is more often than not the opponent's best playmaker. We can use more resources to stop the run or cover TEs with PP on the field.

Everybody is disappointed about his drug use, but it happens in pro sports. Let's hope he's learned his lesson and moves on. I hope he gives us 2 or 3 more elite CB years before moving to S. We need someone across from Budda anyway.

There is no doubt our defense will improve with PP. By how much remains to be seen. But tbh I wouldn't be surprised if we actually field a league-average defense upon his return.

At least with Peterson in tow he was about man coverage and the lack of starting corners prompted him to zone coverage

What happens if the defense fails to step after PP comes back? Are People going to be yelling to sign him to a extension then?

This. I believe he went to zone because we lost our starting two CB's. Once PP comes back we should go back to playing more man coverage. I think Murphy can play man as well. Not sure about Jones. Brock should probably go to the bench.

He’s going to help not hurt but I don’t give an extension for being suspended. He can finish his 2 years left then we can decide.

Said it the other day we don't know and won't know for a bit what PP we're getting back. It's a fair point that's been made here, we do NOT know if PP rebounded from the health issues because as he said he got his diet fixed and found meds that helped him, or if it was actually because he was doping(and masking it).

My hope is the doping happened due to an injury and then he tried to mask it and got caught. But we don't know, we have no idea how many athletes in sports do this.

I do think K9 had a great point the other day, even if PP comes back and he's not the same guy there's always an opportunity if not this year down the line to move him to safety. Teams avoided him for years at CB, at FS that's much harder to do, he's always had great ball skills, great hands. Even if he's not the same athlete when he comes back he'd probably be able to eventually be a huge upgrade at FS for us. But best case scenario he comes back as the same CB he was last year and that allows us to play more man.

If PP plays to the level we believe he can play at, yes I am trying to extend him.

If the defense continues to look like a hot mess and PP is playing poorly or is indicating he wants out, I am not thinking of extending him.

Well with li Billy Bidwills passing, reflect deeply upon that - there was a time in my lifetime when pro football was not a full time gig, you had to have another job to survive. There was no huge contract looming nor any reason to believe that one day there would be any money. Yet here players came from far and wide, to practice much harder than they do today. Got just as hurt, forgot just as fast if not faster.

I don’t think played for just money, respect was earned on the field not in contract negotiations. Glory was soaked in mud, blood and beer. The fans were not a bunch of divas either, they showed in weather and shoveled the field to play championship games in 47 and 48. Reminds me of my favorite all time athlete, Bruce Jenner, footballs went Kaitlin if you ask me. Get down and Waller in the mud till you can’t see their team or their number - and see if they can’t pull up their big girl panties and quit whining like a lil witch. Like my youth.

I think peterson will help dramatically. Taking the top option away from opposing qbs will give the pash rushers a bit more time.

IN Denver, Vance played man with Roby, Talib and Chris Harris. I could see him having a similar plan with Peterson in the Talib role, Murphy in the Harris role, and Brock/Alford in the Roby role.
