Soccer Canada has dismissed allegations from Alphonso Davies' agent that they let the team captain play in a Nations League match despite not being fully fit.
Davies' club Bayern Munich said on Wednesday that left back Davies suffered a cruciate knee ligament tear in Canada's weekend match against the United States which required surgery and that he would be sidelined for several months.
His agent, Nedal Huoseh, told German publishing house Münchner Merkur/tz "I was susprised that he started because he said he was not capable of starting."
Huoseh said coach Jesse Marsh "should have managed the situation in a better, this could have been 100% avoided."
The Athletic meanwhile said that Davies had indicated that he could play, and quoted Canada Soccer spokesman Paulo Senra as saying its "coaches and experienced medical staff are true professionals and have always prioritized player safety and wellbeing.
"Anything suggesting otherwise is untrue," he said.
Senra added: “We want to express our full support for our Men’s National Team captain, Alphonso Davies, as he recovers from this unfortunate injury. Phonzie’s strength and resilience matches his world-class talent, and we all look forward to fully supporting him during his recovery."
Canada will be without their captain for a long period in preparations for the 2026 World Cup they qualified for automatically as co-hosts together with the United States and Mexico.
Davies' injury is even more a bad blow for Bayern who are seeking to reclaim the Bundesliga title and want to go far in the Champions League where they have reached the quarter-finals.
