Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard led the Irish to the College Football Playoff title game, and that was enough to boost his draft stock as the Indianapolis Colts selected him with the No. 189 pick of the sixth round.

While he only played for one season in South Bend, it was a memorable one. It will be hard to forget what he accomplished with Notre Dame, as not only was he great on the field, he was fantastic off it as well.

It should come as no surprise that social media reacted very positively to the Colts pick of Leonard. Here are some of the best.

Riley Leonard finally hears his name called

While Leonard has to wait until the sixth round, his dreams of playing the NFL have come true. He gets to stay close to South Bend, as many in Indiana are already well aware of his capabilities.

Marcus Freeman

This guy is a competitor!!! The @Colts got a great one!

Excited for you, Riley!!! pic.twitter.com/rIiezEMxye

One of the top competitors to come out of Notre Dame in a while, Leonard is the ultimate gamer. His attitude and leadership were on display all year long, and he’ll bring that with him to the Colts.

Jon Gruden

Indy just got themselves one heck of a guy!

Congrats to Riley Leonard, go light up Lucas Oil! pic.twitter.com/bVKAkSWYto

Leonard was one of the few quarterbacks in this class that got to sit and break down film, and run through plays with Gruden in his “QB Class.” It’s pretty clear that Leonard made a very positive impression on the Super Bowl winning coach.

Leonard didn’t focus on football early in his career

Leonard actually thought he was going to play college basketball while in high school, but didn’t get the offers he was looking for. Football was ultimately his calling, and after today, it all worked out for him.

Colts owner Jim Irsay

Welcome to the Colts, TIM SMITH and RILEY LEONARD!

— Jim Irsay (@JimIrsay) April 26, 2025

You love to see when your future boss is excited for you joining his organization. Irsay didn’t have to go far to see Leonard in college, and will get a much closer look at him over the coming years.

Development will happen

As noted before, Leonard will need some time until he’s ready to take over an NFL offense. The Colts know this, but still thought enough of him to take him in the draft.

The Colts have a mold they like at quarterback

I cannot stress this enough: Riley Leonard, in terms of play style and traits, is like if you fused Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones https://t.co/fgaufZS5fi

— Benjamin Solak (@BenjaminSolak) April 26, 2025

When looking at the quarterbacks on the Colts roster, they all have very similar traits. If Leonard is a mold of both of the others at his position, you could see him ascending to the top of the depth chart eventually.

Leonard got his wish

It’s pretty rare that a player wants to land at a team and then it happens. Leonard loved his stay in South Bend, and will continue to be in Indiana just a few hours South to start his NFL career.
