Something about the Logan Thomas pick does make sense...

By this, I mean on a football perspective and not such observations that he comes from BA's old school. The day of the drop back pocket QB is slowly absolving. It is not that the drop back QB is not the better option in the Pros as much as colleges no longer hone those skills. A QB plays in college usually three years if they are lucky with so many coming out early, and then they are suppose to also be studying (they are suppose to be haha). This leaves for little time to craft your traditional QB and why do so when an athletic QB can approach the game in a fashion removed from learning aspects and still get you wins. Andrew Luck really was a once in a decade prospect and I personally think next year's draft will offer much like this year. Then you have the NFL with salary caps, little patience now for a coach to have a winning record and free agency. It is more about the athlete now and not the traditional role of a QB which to me still is the best choice but a choice that is hard to find due to college's direction and lack of time for a QB to evolve. Logan in college was erratic as Lindley and Skelton but he is far superior as a athlete and those situations in the game will be different because of that. I think if BA and Moore can get him close to just a average backup level as a pocket QB, his athletic skill could still make him special :)

All I know is its going to be fun to see how he developes. His athletic ability plus his cannon arm makes for lots of potential. Whether or not it works out well worth the risk imo.

turnover

turnover and under bet is not good, But What do I know I just help pay his salary. I hope we have as much fun as opposing fans.

Naturally, his success or lack thereof, will probably be determined by his completion percentage and his TO numbers. So I guess his sub .60 completion percentage was a case of either poor mechanics or poor decision making. I think it will be a lot easier to fix his decision making. But we have the staff to fix it, IF it can be fixed.

there's a lot of difference between Thomas and Skelton/Lindley...

BA's coaching staff is sooo much better than Whisenhunt's. They actually have enough coaches to be able to work with and develop all of the players. He has a reputation for developing top-tier QBs.

We have a proven starting QB. And (IMO) a damn good backup (I was happy with the idea of Stanton as our starter when we picked him up). Plus our HC isn't close to being fired. So he wont be thrust into the starting role out of desperation.

We have dramatically improved our O line. At least on paper so far. So he wouldn't get murdered in .4 seconds like the other guys.

He already took it upon himself to hire a QB coach of his own to develop on his own time. Which not only will benefit him with the coaching, but it also shows he really wants it and will work hard to get it

I hope all the people drinking the kool-aid on Thomas are right. But, NFL teams drafts largely on potential and guys with his physical ability that played at a major college usually don't last until round 4. There's a reason he was still available. I don't think decision making improves when the games. and decisions that need to be made, are ramped up to a much faster speed.

Maybe he"ll learn the system and the game will slow down enough for him to realize his potential. That would be incredible for the Cards but it's also unlikely. I'd give him about a 20% chance and that's really not all that bad for any 4th rounder.

No less than 4 to 5 years ago I would agree.

But, to tell you the truth, I think the NFL scouts, and analysts are currently suffering with the transition between college and pros.

By that I mean that the college game is starting to become VASTLY different then the pro game. Making, using the new buzz word, "translation" to the NFL harder to judge.

This guy is a 3rd round pick not to long ago.

Logan Thomas ? Boom or Bust QB that is for sure, but with the defense the Cardinals have ? That makes up for A LOT. He doesn't have to be great, he just has to make enough plays. Furthermore, if Thomas can do enough to win, he has a contract of a 4th rounder. He is under contract till 2017 and the most he will cost during that time is $690,000.00. That creates a lot of room to build a team around him.

This. People who are mad about the Thomas pick are acting like he was a first or second rounder. He was a day 3 pick. If you're drafting "sure things" in the 4th round or later, you're drafting depth players. You draft a guy like Thomas, yeah he might never see a 2nd contract, but if he pans out you got the steal of the draft. When you have a vet QB already on the roster and have 3-4 years to wait on a guy, that's the type of QB you should be drafting.

I'm not disappointed but I'm still perplexed. I heard BA on Sirius at least twice last year yucking it up about "gimmick" QB's and athletic QB's and all that, saying he was old school and liked the big drop-back pocket passers. And that was in reference to RG3 and Cam and the like, who have far superior talent than our guy.

I think it was Mitch or maybe K9 who opined that he was a player who would be used to simulate the play of Kaep or Wilson for our defense and I think that has more merit than him being our QBOTF (obviously if that happened it's gravy). Is that worth where he was picked? Probably not, unless they think that puts us over the top against our division rivals and gets us into the playoffs. I do think having a running-QB back there for our D to get used to in practice does benefit us when we go up against the big boys. Even if that's all he did he's more valuable than Lindley.

I'm not sure how good Thomas is going to end up, but Thomas himself said that the style of play that he wants to emulate at the NFL level is that of guys like Aaron Rodgers and Andrew Luck. Guys that look to beat you in the pocket first, but will beat you with their legs if everything is covered down field or if the play breaks down. My guess would be that this was also the vision that BA had for Thomas as well.
