Very ironic given the new steroid policy in baseball these days. Purely coincidental, I’m sure.

I remember reading an article just a few weeks ago that said corked bats do not add any extra power.....let me try to find it

I just watched his press conference after the Cubs game. He claims he grabbed the wrong bat. I almost believe him. It was a very bad cork job. You see bats break all the time, but never longitudinally like Sammy's did (usually they're breaking across where a circular band would be drawn). Dave Otto (the post-game host) said often players goof around with such bats in batting practice.

MLB supposedly took all of Sosa's bats. He claims they won't find any problems with his other bats.

I beleive him. If anyone was so stupid as to try to get away with a corked bat, with the frequency that they break, they must be fooling themselves. Sammy is smarter than that, and if he did it before it would have happened a long time ago.

Hey Sammy....................

How many of those 500 were cork jobs? Does that taint his achievements? Methinks Sammy has Cork for a brain.

Sammy's explanantion seems reasonable, but dont you think he would have a distinguishable mark on the corked bat that he only uses for BP just so things like this do not happen?

What?
Why would you need a corked bat for practice?

Is it to just make yourself feel better or are you really practicing? Why practice with equipment you can never use? It can't do any good.

Might as well play a video game for practice. The benefit would seem equal.

They showed on ESPNews that there was a "C" on top of Sosa's bat. They said it meant "corked", but I couldn't tell if they were serious or not.

I really to believe him because he breaks so many bats as it is, and for them to find a cork now with all other chances would have to mean it was the truth or he is the luckiest person on the face the earth.

Side note, I wonder if they will find a way to blame Darren Baker, Dusty's son, for this one since they said that the bat boy forgot to take it back down.

I posted this on another message board, and thought I would post here as well...

ESPN is running a special "Say it Aint Sosa" right now. They hired a sports collectible company to saw open the bat Sammy used to hit #498. They sawed it in 3 places down the barrel, and found no cork whatsoever.

I think it's silly to say we checked 76 of his bats, no cork, this was a mistake. Ray Fosse(ex player now A's broadcaster) was on radio yesterday talking about and he said they won't find any other corked bats for 2 reasons.

1) He broke the bat in the first inning they didn't sieze his bats until after the game , so he had 8 innings to hide any other corked bats if he had them.

2) He very likely didn't have more than 1-2 corked bats to begin with. Fosse played with and against guys who corked, you don't cork an entire shipment of bats you cork 1-2, and you don't use them every AB either you use them off and on when you think you need an edge.

My personal feeling is his excuse about batting practice is a complete joke, about as believable as Martha Stewart's excuse for dumping Inclone stock just before it tanked. Players in batting practice swing HEAVY bats not light ones, I just don't buy that a guy wants to put a show on for fans so he swings a lighter bat knowing it will probably HURT his performance in games(since his regular bat will feel heavier).

Read the article by Skip Bayless in today's SJ Mercury News(mercurycenter.com). He absolutely takes apart Sosa, calls him the biggest phony in sports he's ever met, said he called him that long before this incident, and thinks Sammy's true colors are now being shown.

Let's face it why would one corked bat tarnish the image of a guy that virtually everyone has suspected of steroid use for 5 years now?
