Just saw this. Carrie Underwood to play Maria. Should be interesting to see a live musical on broadcast TV.

Carrie getting hate tweets for taking the role.

http://www.ibtimes.com/carrie-under...-sound-music-role-says-country-singer-1489880

People get mad because it is a "remake" of the Julie Andrews movie. Except it was a Broadway play first. And this live rendition is more akin to a one-off theatrical revival than a remake of a beloved movie. It is live, after all.

I wish TV would do more of this kind of stuff. Live productions of family classics during the holidays would be an awesome tradition!

I am looking forward to this. Love the Sound of Music, and yes, it was a play first.

Wow, what a world of being pretty and getting gladhanded everywhere she goes that Carrie Underworld lives in that she considers this a "Hate tweet."

"I get hate tweets and stuff like, 'You're not Julie Andrews!'" Underwood told Entertainment Weekly

Seriously I'm surprised she can leave the house with that kind of venom being spewed at her. lol

She was just giving you an example of what's being tweeted to her. You have no idea of what other tweets she gets so I'd reserve judgement if I were you. I'm more concerned with the idiots who are so upset at this that they actually take the time to tweet her over it.

Just got back from visiting Salzburg last October. Got to go visit all of the beautiful sites from the movie. It was really cool.

Although I must chuckle at Underwood playing the role of Maria. If you have ever seen the real life Maria you would too.

Even though she really doesn't fit the role of an Austrian, you can't deny she has the pipes to sing it.

Watched the first hour, then paused it and put the kids to bed. Verdict so far...digging it.

Digiorno pizza live tweeting the broadcast was pretty funny. Actually the tweets in general were pretty snarky, but really funny.

Verdict? I think they're doing a pretty good job.

I thought it was really great.

- Carrie Underwood won't show up on any Emmy list for acting but she sang great

- The sets were incredible

- The children cast were phenomenal

I have it DVR'd and I'll most likely watch again.

I don't understand the appeal or the music of SoM one single iota, but I'm glad y'all have some kind of historical cultural staple. There aren't many of those left (worth keeping).

Massive ratings for NBC. A cultural event (on Twitter). Biggest non-sport NBC telecast in 4 years.

I'd be shocked if the Peacock doesn't try to replicate this formula every year. Of course, this is the Network that gives us 2-3 seasons of the Voice each year, so they'll probably greenlight a special MLK Day presentation of Evita sometime later today.

It was basically watching a broadway play on TV. I think this would have translated better on the stage than on TV. On TV Underwood's lack of acting skills really stood out.

That is the fundamental flaw with this format. On state, you have to overact in order for the people in the back row to see/hear you. On TV, with close-ups, subtlety is key. When the two mediums collide, the mishmash produces awkward results at best.

I would say that for someone who isn't a professional, fulltime actor and given the TV aspect, Underwood did a more than admiral job... There were a few spots where it seemed awkward, but overal, I was actually suprised at how comfortable she seemed and how smooth she moved, spoke, sang and acted...

I enjoyed it.

My facebook was blowing up with all the gays opinions - most of gay America was watching (other than those so disgusted by the thought of Underwood playing Maria they boycotted, and even most of them ended up watching).

What was gay America's opinion of Capt Von Trapp? (I thought he was too good looking. I half-expected young Maria to say, "To hell with the convent" when she finished praying and saw him for the first time.)

Mostly good - but more focused on Underwood - hard to compete with an Icon.

And yes, I though he looked too young for the part
