Steve Nash will be a free agent this summer, increasing the odds that the Suns could trade him before the deadline.

One executive whose team has had serious interest in Nash in the past told SI.com that the Suns are "as close as they've ever been" to realizing that they need to strongly consider a trade.

"I have no idea what the club will eventually do if a bunch of offers are thrown in their face," Nash said, "but I feel like I'm not nervous about [the trade deadline] and I'm not thinking about -- what's the word? -- I'm not anticipating anything to happen. I feel like I made a commitment and I feel like I owe it to my teammates -- the city, the fans, the club -- to play it out and to play as hard as I can."

"Our position has been the same all along, which is I've told him that he has earned the right to stay with our franchise as long as he wants provided that he believes in what we're doing, and provided that he's all in and wants to do that," Lon Babby told SI.com.

Babby has made it perfectly clear that he has no intention of trading Nash unless he requests a trade. Nash has also made it clear that he has no intention of requesting a trade and feels obligated to his teammates and fans to play out his contract. Nothing on those two fronts have changed.

I'm not so sure. This comment sounds like an escape clause to me: "provided that he believes in what we're doing, and provided that he's all in and wants to do that". It's not really anything new but I don't think I've seen him put that many exceptions into his thoughts on Steve.

I think it's pretty clear the organization has no intention of initiating a trade. If Steve doesn't request it, it's not happening. I think his statement wants it clear to the fans that if Steve goes.....it's on Steve.

Yes, taking the easy way out to avoid a public backlash.

Btw, the title of that article is perfect. The Suns closer than ever? The Suns have never even been remotely close to trading Nash, so I suppose that is true.

You're probably right. I just think there's a chance his statement was intended to tell the world that Steve was ready to leave because he didn't believe in what they were doing. I might just be reading too much into that simply because I want it to be true, but really, who knows?

Yeah I think you are misreading it. I remember Babby saying essentially the same thing a while back. It's as if he just reads the same prepared statement whenever he is asked that question.

Next you'll be telling me there's no Santa Claus.:) I remember him making similar comments earlier but I didn't think it was quite as all-purpose as this one was. Again, you guys are probably right.

My 2 cents, Unless Nash request a trade he will be a Sun and Nash wont request a trade, so the article is just a rehash and not a real story

In a van...down by the river.
Fan backlash from the Suns trading Nash at this point in time would be an act of basketball ignorance as far as i'm concerned. I could understand the emotional impact in terms of watching him go however. His face of the franchise would be missed.

This is a BS article. He isn't going anywhere. If he was they would have moved him in the offseason which made more sense. A full season of sucking would have given the Suns a better pick at the very least.

Another item: Doesn't Nash have kid(s) in the Phoenix area? He is split up from his wife, so moving out of town with a trade is not a move I would expect him to make at this point.

Maybe but he spends a big chunk of the off season in NY and I know he likes to spend time in Vancouver.

IMO the big problem with moving Nash is that you're not going to get anything substantial in return. I wouldn't want to be the guy remembered for trading Nash for a role player and a late first that turned out to be someone like Hakeem Warrick.

Trading Nash for nothing so the Suns can suck is also ridiculous. I have never seen a team give away a quality asset so they can stink. They don't need to trade Nash to do this. They could just limit minutes etc...

sorry, but the above is ludicrous. trading him would be MUCH more amenable to everyone than the team actually trying to limit his minutes. that way NO ONE wins and you piss Nash off. Not only is he on a bad team, but they're limiting his minutes too? that just seems like the least likely scenario in the world.

The Suns are not actively soliciting offers if Nash doesn't request it. But they will listen to other teams and trade him if it's in team's interest. Nash is professional enough to not request that the team go out of their way to accommodate him by trading him to a preferred destination of his.

It is not like he has much time this season anyway with the condensed schedule.

The season is only 3 more months including first round of playoffs. I think he can handle that. He can always re-consider things in the offseason anyway.

Sarver has a history of trading assets for nothing.

Ha! And this wouldn't be for nothing either, it would be for potentially a late first rounder in a deep draft and better positioning with our pick. Nash artificially inflates our bottom 3 roster into a mid 10-15 roster, which is utterly worthless. Better we have our draft pick reflect the current level of "talent" on the team.

see, i'd take a gamble. would i trade him for a role player and a late round first? honestly, yes because we'd get something for the future for him. but i'd like it to be a good role player.

that said, i'd really rather roll the dice. trade him to someone like orlando for like two future first rounders. like 2015 and 2017 first rounders. something far enough out that nash is likely done and that team may be crappy. i believe years ago someone fleeced the vancouver grizzlies like that. they traded an okay player now for future draft picks that turned into the 2nd pick in the draft or something like that. yeah we'd have to wait a while, but if the pick ended up being a good pick, it would be like adding a turbo boost to whatever team we will have set up by then.

FWIW, Marc Stein said on Simmons' podcast that he really doesn't see the Suns trading Nash this season. But acknowledged that things could change if another team initiates. Although while everyone debates the likelihood of a trade in principle, the other factor in everything is what Nash would be willing to re-sign for.

It's simple math, folks. Anything times 0 is still 0.

I think the gist is that Suns didn't want to trade Nash because he is the face of the franchise right now but if Nash decides that he wants to be traded to a better team, the front office isn't against it. The front office will make that trade happen even if it means Suns gets a little less back. Are they that generous? lol
