Sources: Bears eye Marc Trestman

Marc Trestman was touted by Bill Walsh to be a coaching genius and a master of the West Coast Offense.

Loads of experience at every level of ball.

The Chicago Bears aren't limiting their coaching search to the American game.

Looking north of the border at a noted quarterback guru from the Canadian Football League, the Bears will reportedly interview Montreal Alouettes coach Marc Trestman for their head coaching position.

With Trestman signing an extension with the Alouettes that takes his deal through 2016, it's unknown whether he'll be allowed out of his CFL contract if the Bears decide to hire him.

The NFL Network reported Saturday the Bears plan to interview Trestman as a potential successor to the recently fired Lovie Smith. Sources tell ESPN the interview will happen Monday....

The source added Trestman "works well with a front office" and is "a player's coach for sure."...

Trestman is coming off an 11-7 season in the CFL. In five seasons with the Alouettes, Trestman has led the club to three appearances in the Grey Cup, including consecutive championships in 2009 and 2010 and has been named the league's coach of the year (2009).

Trestman also possesses considerable experience in the NFL, where he's worked on staffs tutoring quarterbacks such as Steve Young (worked for 49ers from 1995-96), Rich Gannon (Raiders from 2001-03), who was named the league's MVP in 2001, and Bernie Kosar (1989). Trestman also worked in 2007 with the New Orleans Saints as a consultant.

Other NFL stops for Trestman include Minnesota (two stints), Tampa Bay (1987, then again in 2001 as a senior offensive assistant for Jon Gruden), Detroit (1997), Arizona (1998-2000) and Miami (2004) as well as the University of Miami (1981-84), where he received his law degree.

Trestman spent 2005 and 2006 at North Carolina State, before leaving in 08 for the CFL.

In addition to his duties as a coach, Trestman work during the offseason to prepare college quarterbacks for the NFL draft. Trestman worked with Jay Cutler and Bears backups Jason Campbell before their respective drafts....

My impression on Trestman is that he if very intelligent when it comes to football but lacks the social skills or rather the ability to relate to the egos of the modern pro athletes on the NFL level. I do not want to say he is a softy but I just don't think he instills strength in the players. I have no way to back that up and just an impression I get from him and the somewhat nerdy mannerisms and appearance of the guy. That is a horrible way to gauge a person but I cannot avoid it when I look at the guy.

I remember when he was the OC for the Cards. The woman sitting behind me would let "Damnit Trestman, you suck" every time the Cards would have to punt. After a season of that, it was drilled into my head that Trestman sucks.

I agree with this totally.

I got a chance to talk to Trestman up at Flagstaff years ago.

He might be a genius but he had the personality of a dead fish.

Does not impress you at all to talk to him.

Not at all like a lot of NFL players and coaches who seem to have a sense of humor and a personality.

The Bears are apparently tired of kind of winning, and want to go all the way to losing again.

OK, I'll buy in, but...

Bill Belicheck hasn't won many awards for Mr. Congeniality either. (He just makes up for it by being really good).

He's obviously been great in the CFL and I don't want to take anything away from him, but he did inherit perhaps the most stable quarterback situation in football and the all-time passing leader in Anthony Calvillo. It would be interesting to see what he could get out of Cutler.

Many coaches change after getting experience...Bellicheat & Coughlin sure have.

Well look at that the browns are also interviewing him but it sounds like he is interested in the cards job as well. He is the QB/offensive guru we need. Sign me up.

Beware going from specialist to specialist like a billiard ball depending on what our area of greatest need happened to be at the end of a given season.

There's nothing wrong with considering an offensive guru so long as it's not at the expense of all other areas of the football team (& not just by position - if you feel you want to stress "toughness", you may want to avoid an offensive "smart guy" if he's known for "coaching soft").

Well IMO we will still have Horton since hes out of options he's locked into a contract and cant leave unless he becomes a HC which aint happening. With Horton he could provide the toughness while Trestman provides that offensive mindset that could turn things around. We can be soft all day long on offense if we are scoring. NE is not a tough or physical offensive team and neither is NO we can leave that to the defense.

Is Horton currently Cardinal Assistant HC? If not, couldn't he leave to accept a promotion to that title (even if the Cardinals were willing to match it)?
