Southeastern baseball relying on pitchers, softball young guns already making impact

Can Southeastern baseball repeat as sectional champs? To do so, they are going to need another all-conference, all-district outing from returning pitcher Carson McWhorter and his 1.68 ERA, along with Joey Pfiefer and his 1.64 ERA.

Southeastern softball on the other hand is a young team looking to improve up on last season. They got it started on Monday with a 6-5 win over Athens, with the win going to freshman pitcher Kylie Williams who pitched a complete game.

Here is a closer look at the teams.

Southeastern baseball​


Ron Free is in his seventh season at Southeastern, where the team had a 14-13 overall record and finished in fourth place in the Scioto Valley Conference.

They lost Walker Flowers and Hudson Drake from last year's squad.

Returning letterwinners:

  • Lane Williams, senior (OF) .300 avg
  • Joey Pfiefer, senior (P, INF), Honorable Mention All District, and 1.64 ERA
  • Drew Leach, senior, (P, 1B)
  • Gage Cheadle, junior (SS), .329 Avg
  • Coleton Baxter, junior, (INF), .315 Avg
  • Carson McWhorter, junior, (P/INF/OF), first team SVC, first team All District, 1.68 ERA, and 91 Strikeouts
  • Brayden Burns, sophomore (P/INF/OF)

Key newcomers:

  • Landon Brown, junior (INF)

"This is a fun group to be around," said Free. "Our pitching staff will give us a chance to win a lot of games."

Southeastern softball​


Chris Skaggs is in his third year caoching at Southeastern.

Last season the team went 3-22.

Key losses were Jessie Higley, Morgan Ware, and Jozy Lougheed.

Returners are:

  • Ally Fisher, junior, who went 2-for-4 with a run in the opener.
  • Gracie Brown, junior,
  • Riley Stupski, senior,
  • Dylan Skaggs, a sophomore, who went 1-for-1 with two runs and a double
  • Lydia Williams, a sophomore
  • Ava Cyrus, a sophomore

Newcomers:

  • Kylie Williams, freshaman
  • Jade Turner, freshman (third base), who went 2-for-4 in the opener with two runs, three RBIs, and a double.
  • Molly Lowry,, sophomore (outfield)

"Still a young team looking to make some noise in a league where anyone can be beat any night," Skaggs said.
