WASHINGTON - The Washington Nationals are keeping busy in order to maintain their lead atop the National League East Division.

The Nationals acquired second baseman Junior Spivey from the Milwaukee Brewers for righthander Tomo Ohka, Washington general manager Jim Bowden announced on Friday.

With a 4-3 win over Oakland on Thursday, Washington captured its seventh consecutive win to maintain a 1 1/2-game lead over the equally hot Philadelphia Phillies. Both teams have won nine of their last 10 games.

With the trade for Spivey, the Nationals fill a hole at second base that has been present since Jose Vidro was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 9 with a partially torn tendon on the outside of his left ankle. Vidro, a three-time All-Star, is expected to remain out until mid-July.

Spivey, who was considered expendable in Milwaukee because of the emergence of prospect Rickie Weeks, has hit .236 with five home runs and 17 RBIs in 49 games.

Sounds like a steal for the Brewers. Spivey has always been one of the most overrated players in baseball.

I was thinking the same thing. He was traded because of an emerging player who is batting .236.

It just always seemed like he had quite the attitude problem while he was with the Dbacks as well...

His refusal to play RF in '03 ultimately sealed his fate here, but I honestly dont know how he conducted himself over the year (+) he was with the Brewers...

Yes, selected 2nd overall in the '03 draft...

Here's his official website

The Brewers may be a factor w/in the next cpl years..especially if Weeks and Prince Fielder both reach their fullest potential and Ben Sheets continues to anchor their pitching staff as well as he has.....

Yeah, I don't know what he's doing this year but I'm pretty sure they drafted him Top 3 so he's going to get a shot no matter what. It was actually Spivey who's hitting .236. The guy's 30 years old and still can't hit RH pitching.

I watched this jacked up story on HBO real sports about Prince Fielder and all the things his father (Cecil) but him and his mother through. He basically squandered his millions of dollars and disowned his kids. While Prince was trying to get drafted all everyone wanted to talk about was how much of a piece of $hit is dad is and not about his baseball ability. Prince is a really strong kid and I really hope he makes it after seeing that story

Yeah.. I remember when the Tigers would allow the then (I believe he was around 11 or 13 y/o) Prince Fielder to take BP at Tiger Stadium and he'd launch all the balls to the deepest part of the ballpark...It was quite remarkable sight to witness... It's just the question is (such as with his father) whether or not he'll manage to stay in shape throughout his career.... I believe that Prince has more muscle mass (or really less fat) compared to what his father had.....

Rickie Weeks was BA's #1 hot prospect two weeks ago, I think. He's still only in Double-AA ball, and probably not quite ready to step up, but who knows? He's batting .320, OBP .435, SLG .655; 12 HR and 10 steals.
