Spring has arrived on Maryland's Eastern Shore as the weather gets warmer and April is just around the corner. In the Bayside Conference's high school sports, athletes will make their way back outside in the coming days to compete for their spring sports teams.

With sports like baseball, softball and lacrosse kicking off later this week, the spring will be packed with exciting matchups between Bayside squads.

Here are some storylines to follow during the Bayside South's spring sports season:

Baseball: Which team(s) will make long state playoff runs this year?

The Bayside South has been very competitive in the MPSSAA's baseball landscape in recent seasons, with the Eastern Shore's highly talented teams regularly going toe-to-toe with the best from across the Bay Bridge.

Just two seasons ago, a Parkside team loaded with talent earned a Class 2A State Championship. Stephen Decatur has made it to the Class 3A State Semifinals in each of the previous two years, coming very close to appearing in a state championship game both times. James M. Bennett has also been a top team in their 3A region with Decatur, Snow Hill recently made it to a state semifinal in 2022, and Mardela just won its first baseball regional championship in the school's history last year.

Watching these teams battle each other during the Bayside regular season will be thrilling to follow for local high school baseball fans, especially with the knowledge that a few of them could end up being among the best baseball teams that the state of Maryland has to offer this year.

Softball: Will Mardela three-peat as Bayside Conference Champions?

Competition at the top of the Bayside South's softball standings has been fierce in recent seasons, as teams like Stephen Decatur and Mardela have put together great Bayside campaigns, and made long runs in the MPSSAA state playoffs. This season will likely be no different, as the two Bayside South teams are expected to once again compete for the Bayside South and Bayside Conference titles.

Mardela has won each of the last two Bayside Conference Championships, losing less than five regular season games combined over the last two seasons. This year, they'll have the opportunity to three-peat, which will certainly be a main objective for the Warriors heading into the beginning of the season.

Another softball storyline to watch will be which teams break into the top of the Bayside South standings this year, competing with Mardela and Decatur. Teams like Parkside and Pocomoke have hovered around the top 4 in recent seasons, so it will be interesting to see if they stay there, or other teams break through.

There are less Bayside teams competing in lacrosse compared to sports like baseball and softball, which makes the games played between Bayside South teams even more important. And in both boys and girls lacrosse, the Bayside South has been dominated by Stephen Decatur in recent seasons.

Both the boys and girls lacrosse teams for Decatur won the Bayside South in 2022, 2023 and 2024, as they've each made it to the Bayside Conference Champion Games three years in a row. But neither have been able to grab the Bayside title, falling to schools like Queen Anne's and Kent Island.

Whether or not teams like Parkside or Bennett can knock off Decatur in Bayside South boys and girls lacrosse will be a big storyline, as well as whether or not one of the South's teams will triumph over the Bayside North when it’s time to compete for the conference title this season.
