St. John's split with basketball coach Steve Lavin on Friday after five seasons, announcing the decision a week following the Red Storm's loss in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The school said it ''mutually agreed to part ways'' with Lavin. Lavin and the Red Storm reached the NCAAs in his first and last seasons. Athletic director Chris Monasch says Lavin ''returned high expectations'' to the program and ''represented St. John's in a positive way.'' ''Coach Lavin returned high expectations to our men's basketball program and represented St. John's in a positive way,'' said athletic director Chris Monasch.
