If you have to be stuck with the #1 pick and don't have the guts to pass, picking a QB with a chance to be good is really the best option. Good on the Lions. I prefer Sanchez but it's not my team or my money.

Hope things work out for Lions fans.

They haven't reached a contract agreement, the lions just acknowledged that regardless of the contract situation, the Lions will draft Stafford.

Yeah, I think the guy running the ticker overreached for a moment. They haven't repeated it, and they just said that final terms haven't been reached. Or I read it wrong.

Naaaaaaaaaaaaah, must have been the ticker guy :D

Hey Stout. It doesn't matter. The Lions made a good choice.

Just saw Stafford interviewed on ESPN and he said he hasn't spoken to his agent all day and does not know the status of the so-called agreement with the Lions.

Bad pick IMO. They needed to draft someone like Aaron Curry that is going to impact them NOW. This franchise hasn't seen a victory since 2007 and sitting Curry for the first year is not going to help the Lions in any single game. Plus, I don't think he is that great. Sanchez has the better skill set. Stafford is one of those "strong armed" QBs that is a "can't miss." Well, so was Joey Harrington and Jeff George. Million dollar arm, five cent head.

EDIT: $41.7 mil guaranteed and worth up to $78 if he hits all of his incentives

Sources: Stafford will be No. 1 pick
ESPN.com news services

Goergia quarterback Matthew Stafford has agreed to a six-year deal with the Lions, sources close to the quarterback told ESPN's Chris Mortensen. The contract is worth $41.7 million guaranteed over six years. The number could grow to $78 million with incentives.

So another words around $7M per year to $13M per year. Seems like a great deal for the #1 pick.

$41M guaranteed is a pretty high guarantee for someone who has never played a down in the NFL. I highly doubt he'll make the Pro Bowl once during his tenure in Detroit.

You can't win in the NFL without a very good QB, history proves that. Regardless if the pick works out or not teams have to try. Look at all the teams in the playoffs last season they all have good to great QB's. Look back at all the Super Bowl champions and they had that guy except maybe the Ravens. That is why the position is so coveted by teams.

Yeah, but the Lions are in a no-win situation. No matter what, they're stuck paying ginormous money to an unproven kid. Might as well try for that franchise QB, 'cause you're paying big one way or another.

They could have had LB Aaron Curry, who is the safest pick in this draft. He had already committed to signing for lower than Jake Long last season. Instead, they are gambling $42 mil to see if this guy is the franchise. I would have waited until the 3rd or 4th round to groom a QB.
