Stargate coming back to life with film trilogy reboot

http://www.blastr.com/2013-9-5/fina...logy-0?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook

Director Roland Emmerich has revealed that he is prepping a trilogy of new Stargate films meant to reboot the franchise. Originally Emmerich had envisioned Stargate as the first part of a trilogy — but MGM opted to make Stargate SG-1 instead, which ran for a decade and led to the two additional TV spinoffs.

Now that the franchise has been dormant a few years, Emmerich decided it was time to come back and give it another shot. Though the rebooted trilogy could borrow from some of his original plans, Emmerich was quick to point out that the new films will not be connected to the original Stargate film, noting “the actors look totally different ... it would not work.”

The films will almost certainly not connect to the SG-1 universe, either, since Emmerich has never really been a huge fan of the small-screen version of the franchise. To this day, he maintains it is not a “canon” continuation from his film.

I freaking love everything Stargate. In this case I don't see how you don't do a reboot. The television show pretty much is engrained as the continuation of the characters.

Plus I am happy they are looking at this as a trilogy versus one film. The original film, at the time, was one of the best sci-fi movies I had seen in a long time. Sucks it didn't continue back at that time.

Ditto. But Devlin/Emmerich had no connection to the TV show and were against it from the very beginning. I loved the original movie but I thought the TV franchise took that to a whole new level. I know I'm in a distinct minority but if I were to choose between the three "Star" franchises I'd choose Gate over Trek and Wars. Love them all but Stargate stands alone for me.

I think that's what made it bittersweet for me. I loved the film and think they should have made more. I had no idea how good the TV shows would become and ended up loving them just as much.

I just want to see the franchise continue.

MGM, Warner Bros. Launching 'Stargate' Trilogy With Roland Emmerich to Direct

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/mgm-warner-bros-launching-stargate-708044

MGM and Warner Bros. are launching a new feature film trilogy based on the 1994 film Stargate.

Roland Emmerich, who directed and co-wrote the original film with Dean Devlin, will direct and Devlin will produce.

At the time of its release, the sci-fi film Stargate, starring Kurt Russell and James Spader, set the record for the highest-grossing opening weekend in October, and went on to gross nearly $200 million worldwide at the box office.

So which franchise do you prefer? I like all the Star Trek series and the movies and I've even read a few hundred of the books but I can't say I ever truly loved it like I did the other two franchises. I don't think anything will surpass the joy I felt when I first watched Star Wars and the two sequels but Stargate SG-1 was also a lot of fun and there were 213 episodes, it's hard to beat that mix of quality and quantity.

Sorry, ridiculous fanboi comment was pretty ridiculous. ;)

Actually, I just couldn't ever get past MacGyver playing the Kurt Russel character. Some of the stories were pretty good and the effects seemed well done for the most part. That hang-up is probably what held me back.

As far as favorite franchise, Star Wars gets the edge, but I love me some Trek. Especially the later seasons of TNG and the original series.

Couldn't agree more. There's only one, "Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol' storm right square in the eye and he says, "Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it." "

I'm not sure how it's a fanboy comment and I know it wasn't intended as an insult but it doesn't come very close to the mark IMO (Wiki defines: Fanboy or fanboi is a term used to describe an individual who is utterly devoted to a single subject or hobby. Seriously, if I qualify as a fanboy of anything it is entertainment in general.

I've had multiple viewings of every Star Trek movie and every Star Trek episode except for the 3rd and 4th seasons of Enterprise, Stargate just does it better IMO. I think the best episodes of each show are on a par but after the first season of SG-1, I think their filler episodes are a notch above the fillers of Next Gen, Voyager and DS9. TOS has some of the greatest characters ever created and it has some truly classic episodes but the show itself was special mostly for it's uniqueness. It was pretty lame more often than not.

As for the McGyver issue. I retired in the mid-90's so I have a lot of free time and now watch just about everything but when McGyver was running I was losing an average of 18 hours a day to my job and commute (7 freaking days a week). I've never seen a single episode of the show. To me, RDA is Jack O'Neill. I loved Kurt in the role too (how can you not love Kurt in any role?) but they stop feeling like the same character early in season one IMO. Besides, I love just about everything Kurt Russell does even though I see Snake Plisskin in every role he plays.

For the record, I was referring to myself as the fanboy. From my fanboy POV, SW and ST are the pinnacle and cannot even be mentioned in the same sentence as the SG tv series.

If I am being honest though, I've never even seen more than a few episodes of SG the series and should't even be critiquing it. Let alone calling you out.

So, I've seen the fanboi, and it is I.

I'll go play with my stormtrooper figure now and let the adults talk for a while. ;)

You fool!!! They can pry my Snowtrooper figures from their original packaging when Hoth freezes over, again.

I loved the first three Star Wars movies but they were made for my generation as much as the one to follow. Not so with Episodes 1-3, I suspect they were made to irritate my age group. So while I can honestly say no one episode or movie from either Trek or Gate measures up to the joy of watching SW 5-7, the sheer quantity of good work in both the Gate and Trek worlds move them in front for me.

apparently the original creators had issues with rights and such when they did Stargate 20 years ago. Now they have that worked out and they are ready to reboot, but this time also include the two follow up films.

I would be pretty stoked to see this...loved Stargate,...loved the SG-1 spinoff..........pretty sure I will love a reboot as well...

this is happening....

Yeah, I've been anxiously awaiting this for quite awhile. I'd rather have seen a reboot of the SG-1 series but I loved the original movie too so I'll take what I can get. I just want it tomorrow.

Interesting. Wonder if this means a series reboot won't happen. :(

I've been thinking it's been awhile, and they could do one soon. Plus one of the big reasons Sci-Fi cancelled alot of series was the Canadian exchange rate made it far less profitable. Now it's reversed and the cheaper Canadian Dollar makes filming in Vancouver much cheaper again. I think that's also why we've seen a big resurgence in original programming for Sci-Fi, since they film EVERYTHING in the Vancouver area.

Movies, straight to cable/dvd movies (like those disaster movies)... which is also why you see a ton of people that played parts in the Stargate series cast in those movies.

It's been close to 10 years since the original series went off the air, and five years since the ill fated Stargate Universe folded.

Movie was great too, saw it in the theater. Can't wait.

But.... since they're going to sidestep the television series, and be with the original creators, it's probably unlikely a series will be created and if so, not anytime soon. If this is going to be a trilogy, it might be 6-8 years before the final film in the trilogy is released.

It also means that the original creators probably don't have the same links to Sci-Fi channel, which makes any series, anytime less likely. Though if they film the movies in Vancouver, it might be a good sign.

The remake of Stargate is not happening, and we know why

http://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/remake-stargate-happening-know-exclusive/

“It looked good for a couple of months, but now it’s not looking so good,” offers Devlin, guiding force of The Librarians television series, returning for its third season next week. “There are just a lot of things that have to fire at the same time, and there was a moment where I thought it was all firing at the same time, and then it all kind of fell apart.”

He attributes much of the blame to the current system of moviemaking, where everything is driven by numbers and a desire for the idea of a franchise without the same sort of attention being paid to the product itself. “It’s one of the reasons I prefer to work independently,” he says. “Listen, I think if we did Stargate right, the fans would like it and we could do something really good. But if we screw it up, they’ll reject it. As they should. But I kind of don’t want to do it if I think that we’ll screw it up, and that’s one of the things that’s holding us back.”

The original Stargate was actually produced independently without the backing of a major studio, which granted the filmmakers an extraordinary amount of freedom. Today, Devlin notes, the situation would be very different: “You’d have several studios involved and a lot of voices and, you know, you may make something great, but you also may have something that doesn't resemble what you wanted to do. That kind of ‘collaboration’ is a terrifying aspect of the whole thing.”
