Go to Start/Run and type in

"msconfig"

click on the Startup Tab.

Decide what you want to run when your computer starts.

Another thing I have found to be useful is to

Open Regedit

Locate key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\MemoryManagement\PrefetchParameters

Change EnablePrefetcher from 3 to 5 and reboot twice.

This key tells the operating system to remember the programs you have launched and allows them to load quicker. After time this list starts to build up even with programs you used 1 time.

This will purge that list

Make sure you know what the program is though before you click it off. If you turn off some of the windows start up programs you could hose the computer. General rule of thumbs is that if you don't know what it is, leave it on.
