No one is thrilled with the never-ending waiting game surrounding Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers, and it initially appeared that veteran DT Cam Heyward was sick of it as well following his comments on the matter. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith harshly criticized the defensive lineman over the situation, and Heyward recently cleared the air surrounding his original statement regarding Rodgers.

Appearing on The Rich Eisen Show, Heyward was given the floor to defend himself and his previous comments:

“Everybody gave me crap—they said I called him [Aaron Rodgers] out. I don’t think I really called him out. I just said I wasn’t going to go on a darkness retreat to recruit him. If he wants to be a Steeler, he can be a Steeler. That’s the pitch—I just want to win games and play good football.”

Heyward, responding to a follow-up question by Eisen, explained that he would welcome Rodgers to the team:

“Anybody who signs, I welcome to the team. I don’t have an ego and think like, ‘We can’t win with a guy.’ I get excited for our team. You bring a guy on like that—he’s got a good knowledge of the game, and I think he can only help.”

Rodgers recently visited the Pittsburgh Steelers and left without a contract—but is Heyward’s desire to walk back his original stance an indication that a deal is imminent?
