Keeps on harping about how Spurs beat themselves. No credit to how close Suns were all the time to be able to win, how hard they fought back from double digit deficits agains a "#1" team, how much confidence & resiliency did they show! On top of that he has the nerve to say...
Duncan and Parker must surely also realize, after losing for the fourth time in five games to these guys, that the Suns don't need any more help.
Well Mr. Stein, how about those refs helping out the Spurs most of the game??

Well, Stein's right. Obviously, the Spurs wouldn't have lost the game if it weren't for the way the Suns fought throughout the game, but the fact is that if Tim Duncan hadn't missed 4 of 6 free throws in the last 10 seconds of the game, San Antonio would have a 1-0 lead in the series and would right now be feeling pretty good about themselves. Obviously, you should give some credit to Phoenix for their efforts, but the bottom line is 15 feet away from the San Antonio basket. Call it the charrity stripe, call it the free throw or foul line, but realize that it's the bottom one as well.

And I think you're missing this point as well. Stein is saying that the Suns have had little problem beating the Spurs consistently, and by Duncan and Parker missing key free throws, it's only helping out Phoenix even more. Stein is saying that the Suns don't need help beating this team.

That is a compliment to the Suns.

Yeah, I guess I read it the other way probably because by the end of article I was already pissed at Stein.

But, I still think that last second free throws shouldn't have mattered if not for the Suns' effort. Suns gave themselves a chance to win by a desperation shot because they fought and fought throughout the game. Just the way I look at it.
