Bada0Bing will see it eventually. He sees everything. :D

So do I, but never will see these types of movies. How on earth do these movies make money? Girls dragging the moms to go? I don't get it.

Step Up 2: The Streets (2008)
Step Up 3D (2010)
Step Up Revolution (2012)

My wife dragged my daughter to see it on Saturday....

I suspect there is a lot of dragging. :)

They are made for like $10 million each. It's the horror movie model. Do a genre flick on the cheap and fans will still come see it.

The first four were made with increasing budgets each trip back to the well.

The first film is close to what you are describing - made for $12 million.

The next 3 sequels, however, were made for $23 million, $30 million, and $33 million, respectively.

No available budget numbers for the latest film...

What profit did they make on each?

Step Up (2006) $12,000,000 = USA: $65,328,121 / Worldwide: $114,194,847

Step Up 2: The Streets (2008) $23,000,000 = USA: $58,017,783 / Worldwide: $150,816,700

Step Up 3D (2010) $30,000,000 = USA: $42,400,223 / Worldwide: $159,291,809

Step Up Revolution (2012) $33,000,000 = USA: $35,074,677 / Worldwide: $140,470,746

Step Up: All In (2014) N/A = USA: TBD / Worldwide: $49,200,000

Each film has dropped in revenue here in the USA as the series has continued, but worldwide it has increased with each of the first three and dropped off only a little with the fourth.

Pretty obvious why they can keep making them. They do make money.

Great interview with Adam Shankman (Producer) about the series and how it has evolved. http://collider.com/adam-shankman-step-up-all-in-interview/

A few highlights:

This never started out with any kind of intention of being this. The first one was really a stand-alone drama with some dancing in it. The second one was originally conceived to be this fun straight-to-video thing, and then Jon Chu had such an advanced vision of it, and Summit agreed to do a second one for theatrical release. And then, it just kept snowballing, and here we are.

What is strange now is that, because of shows like So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing with the Stars, dancers are, in fact, household names in certain households. They have faces and they have personalities and they have fan bases. What they don’t have is money. They are out there hustling jobs, just like the rest of us, when they win these shows. I love the Step Up movies because I get to use them as hiring grounds for those shows.

More often than not, we get a lot of questions about Channing and Jenna [Dewan-Tatum], but they’re leading very busy and very expensive lives, and they’re producing their own movies now. These movies are made a certain way that couldn’t economically justify what that might look like.
